ZR2

The very first Silverado ZR2 comes as the new flagship in the Chevy pickup program. It's almost time; with the 2022 Silverado ZR2, Chevy is making a new off-road variant available to its customers, and it wants to be the Trail Boss.

This is an aggressive and muscular V8 pickup that boasts race-bred off-road performance. In addition, the ZR2 offers a new premium interior, impressive technology, and a range of standard safety equipment - all in one package.

With the Silverado ZR2, Chevrolet joins the big US pickup arms race. Ford had presented its F-150 Raptor, which is equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and brings 456 hp and a maximum of 691 Nm torque to the road.

This was followed by the response from Ram Trucks, who brought out a real monster with the 1500 TRX. The 6.2-liter V8 "Hellcat" with supercharging delivers a brute 712 hp and 881 Nm of torque, which incidentally makes it currently the fastest and most powerful series pickup.

The Silverado ZR2 differs from the standard models in terms of looks, especially in the front design. In addition to the new front bumper, the new Chevy off-road pickup has a modified grille with integrated lighting and FlowTie emblem, and a new black hood insert.

All trim levels of the 2022 Silverado have a new front fascia with a revised grille that positions the headlights lower and eliminates the controversial "blades" on the front corners of previous models.

Starting with the LT trim level, the daytime running lights have an animated sequence when the driver approaches or departs from the car. There are also three new exterior colors: Dark Ash, Sand Dune, and Glacier Blue Metallic.

Underneath the vehicle, the attached underrun protection can also be partially seen, and the exhaust twin tailpipes that have been moved to the front and, of course, the ZR2 emblems reveal the new hardcore truck from Chevy.

Chevy is much more discreet than its competitors and uses the extensive facelift of the 2022 Silverado to bring a new sports version with tightened off-road properties onto the market. Strictly speaking, the TRX and Raptor play in a different class with more power, wider fenders, and a wider track (compared to their respective model series).

The Interior

A two-tone leather interior dominates the interior of the new ZR2 in Jet Black and Graystone with dark trim. In addition, as with all Silverado models from the LT version upwards, there is a 12.3-inch instrument display and a central 13.4-inch touchscreen in the cockpit.

The huge instrument display in front of the driver is fully customizable depending on the information the driver wants to see. There is now an electronic shifter in the center console on models with individual front seats. The shifter is still on the steering column on models with a bench seat.

The top-of-the-range High Country gets open-pore wood trim on the console, upper glove box, and door panels. The leather seats are given an individual perforation and stitching pattern. Stainless steel grilles cover the speakers of the Bose stereo system.

All trim levels of the new 2022 Silverado now come standard with Chevrolet's Safety Assist package. This includes, among other things: automatic high beam, emergency braking, and lane departure warning.

The Power

Under the hood of the new ZR2, there is a large-displacement 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine from GM. With an output of 313 kW / 426 hp and a torque of 624 Newton meters, it really doesn't need to hide.

The engine is coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission. While its payload is 653 kg, its trailer load is around 4 tons. In order to significantly increase the off-road capability of the pickup, far-reaching changes were made - such as:

  • 40 mm raised Multimatic suspension with adaptive dampers (DSSV slide valve dampers)
  • Uniquely tuned springs that increase maximum travel front and rear
  • Electronic locking differentials on both axles
  • Specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, including Terrain mode that enables rock crawling with one pedal
  • 33" off-road tires on 18" rims
  • Unique underride protection package
  • New steel front bumper designed for off-road strength, durability, and ground clearance (improved approach angle - 31.8 degrees)
