Toyota is getting ready to launch the 2023 GR Supra, with a large number of interesting upgrades and modifications.
Toyota looks like it’s in a work frenzy these days, working on all fronts, overhauling several models in quick succession. After the GR86, the GR Corolla now it’s the 2023 GR Supra’s turn to put on some makeup. This busy schedule puts Toyota ahead of all Japanese carmakers this year, leading the Japanese sports car renaissance.
We will start with the most interesting upgrades, and the first one is of course the manual transmission in the 3.0 model. Happy news for old school drivers! besides transmission, all new supra models with 6 cylinders will have retuned suspension and steering, which makes handling the car more stable. Traction and stability control made a comeback too on all trims, in addition to the new Hairpin+ drive mode that makes turning corners a lot easier. The four-cylinder Supra 2.0 models will also receive some suspension and braking system upgrades.
As you may know, the 2023 Toyota GR Supra is not a pure Toyota, a lot of the car’s components come from BMW. This detail was most obvious in the car’s interior. Buttons, knobs, and screens all come from BMW inventory, despite that, the car succeeded in creating its proper style and personality. The cabin is not exactly luxurious, not by BMW’s standards anyway. But it’s quite reasonable when you factor in the car’s moderate cost.
The Supra’s screens are a mixture of Toyota’s and BMW’s technology; the instrument panel was specifically made for the 2023 supra, but the standard 8.8-inch infotainment display comes straight from other BMW models, complete with the control knob and additional menu buttons.
The system works fine, but as in other BMW models you may encounter connectivity problems with the Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay functionalities
Infotainment systems are good and all, but as a responsible driver you should also be looking for safety systems. The Supra comes standard with a forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and auto high beams.
If you want more, The Premium trim offers adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems, and parking sensors
When it comes to size, the supra is a bit small, with only 97.2 inches wheelbase and 172.5 inches total length. The new thing about the 2023 model is that it will fit two seats only, with narrow cargo space. This doesn’t mean that the cabin is uncomfortable, the seats are quite spacious, enough for 6 feet passengers. And you can squeeze 4 bags inside the cargo area.
Naturally, performance stats differ between the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four supra and the 3.0-liter inline-six one.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four comes straight from BMW plants, and it’s able to make 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Toyota claims that it can go from a standstill to 60 in 5 seconds. Acceleration that puts it on par with the Porsche 718 Cayman and The BMW Z4. We still don’t know what the fuel consumption figures look like, but at least we have the ’22 Supra as a reference, the old model returned 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.
As you may expect the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six numbers are significantly better, the 382 hp and 368 lb.-ft of torque, allow it to reach the 60-mph mark in 3.9 seconds.
Just like the 2.0, we still don’t have the fuel economy performance numbers, last year’s model was as follows; 22 on city roads, 30 on highways, and 25 combined.
It’s worth noting that the 3.0-liter Supra is the only model that comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Which is the main sales point for the ’23 lineup
Deep pockets are not necessary to own a supra, that is one of its many advantages. 2023 prices were not disclosed yet, however, we know that last year’s model was sold for $44,565, including the $1,025 destination charge for the Supra 2.0. with an additional $8,000 for the 3.0 model.
