Ford is discontinuing the traditional three-box body style in the United States and plans to retire the Mondeo from its European model line-up later this month.
The company is already selling a new generation of its Mondeo sedan in China, and this vehicle will be joined by a liftback version inspired by crossover SUVs.
Ford has confirmed the development of a successor to the Fusion and Mondeo, although the new models will not be sedans.
New spy photos show the automaker is working on a boxy SUV that may replace the Fusion and Mondeo in the hierarchy. The new SUV is a utility vehicle with an edgy design. Though still under development, it is clear its look is derived from the production sedan. Still, some aspects of the design are evident even amid camouflage.
Ford Is Testing A New Boxy SUV, Could It Be The Fusion Active?
Ford appears to have adopted a variation of its design language for the Chinese market, as seen in the Mondeo and Evos. To a certain extent, the Equator and the Equator Sport could be indicators of what kind of SUV this might be.
As yet, no other information about the prototype is available, but we do know that it has an exhaust pipe. The engine under the hood is confirmed to be a combustion engine, but whether it is putting power directly to the wheels or if it's part of a hybrid system cannot be determined now.
Although Ford has yet to confirm that it will resurrect the Fusion Active nameplate, there have been rumors of a new Fusion with a higher ride height.[1]
