Big, beefy, and a V8 under the hood! With this combination, the Chevrolet Silverado has been one of the most popular pickups in the USA since 1998 - the Chevy ranks second behind the Ford F-150 in the registration statistics.

The Silverado uses the same technical platform on which the group brothers Tahoe and Suburban build. In addition to the conventional variant, Chevrolet also offers the Silverado as a “heavy-duty” with increased payload and towing capacity.

Characteristic features of the pickup are the superimposed double headlights, the vertical front, and the wide chrome clasps on the radiator grille. In this article, we wanted to share all the information and history about the Chevrolet Silverado.

Chevrolet Silverado - 1st Generation (1998 - 2007)

Wikimedia

The first-generation Chevrolet Silverado rolled off the assembly line at GM's plants (in the US and Mexico) from 1998 to 2007, with the GMC Sierra as its mechanical twin. On the Mexican market, however, the pickup was marketed under the name " Chevrolet Cheyenne”.

This full-size pickup truck (made by US automaker General Motors) was based on the GMT800 platform and was the actual successor to the C/K series. Previously, the name " Silverado " was used for the top trim level of the C/K models. Now it was launched under the Chevrolet Silverado as an independent model, where its muscular and aerodynamic design quickly made it very popular with the public.

The manufacturer's plan thus worked out perfectly, whose goal was to base the new pickup series on the design of the body more closely on the full-size SUVs in the future. The same applied to the interior fittings, where up to now they have lagged behind in terms of comfort.

Since then, the Chevy pickups with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and different cab structures have been considered the flagships among GM trucks. The Silverado 1500 and 2500 were released in mid-1998 as a '99 model year. An HD version followed a little later.

The characteristic front section with the superimposed double headlights and the wide chrome clasp in the radiator grille was taken over from the predecessor (C/K series). From the front, it was almost identical to the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs.

The heart of the first Chevrolet Silverado is a new ladder frame on which all the main units and assemblies are located. The hydroformed frame contributed to the increased strength and rigidity.

An independent double-wishbone suspension with passive shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar was installed on the front axle of the pickup, while at the rear, there is a dependent system with longitudinal springs. Furthermore, the Silverado was the first pickup truck to be delivered with four disc brakes as standard – at least in the first few years.

The first generation of the Chevy Silverado was offered in different versions and weight classes as well as in different wheelbases. In addition, the customers had a choice of three loading areas (beds) of different lengths.

In 2003, the pickup received a new front end, and the rear was also slightly changed. From the 2005 model year onwards, all GMT800 light-duty pickups had their rear disc brakes removed as standard (due to cost reasons) and replaced with drum brakes. Only the heavy-duty trucks continued to have four disc brakes.

Another facelift occurred in 2006, which also included removing the "Chevrolet" badge from the tailgate.

At launch, the first-generation Chevy Silverado pickup had a total of three Vortec engine options: a 4.3-liter V6, a 4.8-liter V8, and a 5.3-liter V8. In the years that followed, GM added additional options (mainly for the HD and special models), ultimately expanding the engine lineup from a 4.3-liter V6 to an 8.1-liter V8, and a 6.6-liter -V8 diesel version was enough.

A 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission was responsible for the respective power transmission. Various Heavy Duty models were also fitted with a 6-speed gearbox.

Around 600 to 700 thousand of these first-generation Silverado pickups were sold annually in America. The last GMT800 cars from 2006 and 2007 were called "Classic" to mark the difference between the first and second generation.

First Generation Silverado Heavy Duty (HD) Trucks

GM also released an HD (Heavy-Duty Light Truck) variant. This high-performance series rolled off the assembly line in 2000. This was a reinforced version of the Silverado Light-Duty, designed to tow and carry heavy loads.

These models were listed under the designations: 1500HD, 2500HD, and 3500HD. The latter was often equipped with dual tires on the rear axle.

Special Editions

In the first edition, a number of unique variants of the Silverado were offered.

SS

Wikimedia

In early 2003, Chevrolet introduced a high-performance pickup - the Silverado SS. This was based on the Silverado 1500 Extended Cab model with Fleetside Box, but with an improved powertrain and a different appearance - inside and out.

A 6-liter V8 engine with 257 kW/349 hp and 515 Newton meters of torque at 4,000 rpm slumbers under the hood – coupled with the 4L65E four-speed automatic transmission. The Silverado SS also featured Z60 Performance suspension, 20-inch aluminum wheels, various custom paint jobs, and used torsion bar-style front suspension for better handling.

At the market launch, the SS was only available as an all-wheel-drive version. Only in 2005, in order to increase sales, a two-wheel-drive version was released. You could also order a sunroof from then on. A year later (2006), however, the AWD variant was completely removed from the program for cost reasons.

Intimidator SS

A special edition Silverado SS followed Chevy in 2006. The vehicle was marketed under the name Intimidator SS, built in honor of the late Dale Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt was a very successful American stock car (NASCAR) racer and team owner whose aggressive driving style earned him the nickname "The Intimidator".

This special edition was basically a standard Silverado SS, with a few changes like a rear spoiler, embroidered headrests, and Intimidator badging. A limited run of 1,033 units was planned, but only 933 Intimidator SS pickups were made.

Hybrid

Wikimedia

In 2004, the Silverado Hybrid was launched, which was the brand's first production hybrid. According to today's definition, however, this was only a " micro-hybrid " because it was an electric motor housed in the flywheel housing of the transmission.

The energy generated there was required for a start-stop system, charging three additional batteries (under the rear seat) and four AC sockets (120 volts, 20 amperes) for the operation of various accessories. The latter made it particularly interesting for contractors. The Silverado Hybrid was powered by a 5.3 l Vortec 5300 V8 engine.

Chevrolet Silverado - 2nd Generation (2006 - 2013)

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

The manufacturer released the second generation of the Chevrolet Silverado (as well as the identically constructed Sierra from GMC) in the last quarter of 2006 as a 2007 model. It was now based on the GMT900 platform. The heavy-duty models followed in early 2007. With this new truck, Chevy continued to ensure its competitiveness with the F-150, the Toyota Tundra, and the Ram 1500.

Compared to the first generation, the styling of the pickup had now been significantly modernized, which also paved the way for today's Silverado. In the first year, the production of the first generation was continued in parallel with the second generation, now labeled as the Silverado " Classic ".

In its debut year, the new edition won two prestigious awards - Motor Trend Truck of the Year and North American Truck of the Year. The second-generation Chevrolet Silverado went on sale with a new design, new interior, increased performance, and more advanced technology.

Although the completely revised Chevy pickup still retained its square silhouette, the aerodynamics had been significantly improved over the previous model. Among other things, a strongly inclined windscreen and narrower gaps led to improved fuel consumption.

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

The front end with its characteristic identifying feature, the superimposed double headlights, was also retained. This time, however, with larger headlight units, a revised radiator grille (with a wide horizontal slat in the middle), and lots of chrome, which made the Silverado 2 look significantly beefier at the front.

In addition to the changed exterior appearance, the second edition Silverado received a new steel frame with higher strength, which improved the rigidity of the body by a whopping 92 percent. New suspension, hydraulic body mounts, and other changes provided better durability and handling. A rack and pinion steering system was also installed here for the first time in a full-size Chevy pickup.

The 2nd generation continued to be offered in the following cabin configurations: Regular Cab (two-door), Extended Cab (extended cabin/four-door), and Crew Cab (crew cabin/four-door). However, customers could now (with the extended cabin) decide how the rear doors can be opened. Either in the same direction as the front doors or up to 170 degrees opposite.

Furthermore, the popular Chevy pickup was now available in a total of five different equipment variants as WT, LS, LT, XFE and LTZ. In addition, the Silverado II was also offered as a hybrid.

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

In the premium LTZ trim level, the Silverado offered its occupants a great deal of luxuries - such as a special design for the dashboard, seats, and door panels, which was carried over from the Tahoe and the Suburban. It continued with the Bose audio system, heated leather seats, an electrically sliding rear window, parking aids, side airbags, windscreen wipers with rain sensors, and much more.

Up to five different power units were found under the hoods of the second-generation Silverado pickups. Ranging from a 4.3-liter V6 with 197 hp to a 6.2-liter V8 with 409 hp and 565 Nm of torque, which catapulted the pickup from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds.

However, the 5.3- and 6.0-liter V8s were revised with new features such as the deactivation of the cylinder, Active Fuel Management. Furthermore, customers could order the Chevy Pickup Silverado in configurations with two or four-wheel drive.

The outdated 4-speed automatic continued through 2009, eventually being replaced by a modern 6-speed version. The six-speed manual gearbox was also completely banned from this generation in 2008. Only in Mexico you could get the Silverado 1500 (V6 version) and the Silverado 3500 as a manual.

The Silverado 1500's maximum trailer load increased slightly to 10,500 pounds (4,763 kg) with the 6.0-liter powerplant while staying between 7,700 and 8,500 pounds with the 5.3-liter (depending on cab and package). This was still well below the Ford F-150, but at least it was on par with the Ram 1500 and the Toyota Tundra.

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

In late 2008, Chevy also released a second edition Silverado Hybrid model (Two-Mode Hybrid as a 2009 model). As a mild hybrid, the previous generation could only serve as a practical power generator on construction sites, this version really earned the label "hybrid".

The Chevrolet Silverado Two-Mode Hybrid was offered exclusively in the crew cab configuration (Crew Cab) - optionally with two or four-wheel drive. Under its hood slumbered a 6.0-liter V8 engine with 337 hp and 498 Nm of torque, which was combined with two 60 kW electric motors.

A 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery, which was stowed under the rear seats, served as energy storage. The combined total output was thus dubbed a total of 384 hp by the GM engineers.

This enabled the Silverado Hybrid to travel purely electrically at up to 30 mph. Furthermore, the V-8 engine still had a cylinder deactivation system (AFM / Active Fuel Management), whereby half of its cylinders (under light load) could be switched off. However, due to poor sales development, GM discontinued the Silverado Hybrid as well as various other Chevy and GMC hybrid models after the 2013 model year.

Second Generation Silverado Heavy Duty (HD) Trucks

Wikimedia

The Silverado Heavy-Duty models’ (2500HD and 3500HD) second editions were launched in early 2007. There was a choice of three cab designs, three equipment variants, two interiors, three loading areas of different lengths, five different wheelbases, and two drivetrains.

Standard on the Chevy HD models was a 6.0-liter V8 Vortec engine initially with 358 hp and 506 Newton meters of torque - from the model year 2009 finally with 364 hp and 515 Nm of torque. Unlike the ½-ton models (1500s), however, a six-speed automatic transmission was installed here from the start.

Another option was a powerful 6.6-liter V8 diesel engine, which delivered a segment-leading 370 hp and 895 Nm of torque. From the 2011 model year, the performance finally increased to 402 hp and a whopping 1,037 Nm of torque. All Chevy HD models were available with an integrated trailer brake control, and their maximum towing capacity was around 6 tons.

Chevrolet Silverado - 3rd Generation (2013 - 2019)

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

The third edition of the Chevy Silverado (along with the GMC Sierra Gen. 4) was first presented in December 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. The pickup finally made its public debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS 2013), where it was unveiled as a 2014 model.

Finally, in May 2013, the Silverado 1500 went on sale for the first time. The HD series (heavy-duty models) followed in early 2014, which in turn was marketed as the 2015 model year.

Now based on a new “ K2XX ” platform, the 2014 Silverado was redesigned from the hood to the trailer hitch. In addition to the new style upgrade, the third-generation Silverado primarily relied on new technologies that made the truck more modern, stronger, more intelligent, and more powerful than ever before.

Compared to the previous generation, the third edition of the Silverado was characterized by being quieter, smoother, and more energy-efficient than before.

Among the numerous improvements were the functional, aerodynamic, and modern design with new EcoTec3 engines. It created stronger, quieter, and more comfortable cabins with new interiors with refined features and connectivity. Chevy also improved ride and handling through revised steering, suspension, and brakes.

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

As with the predecessor, the third Silverado generation continues to rely on lots of chrome and a beefy front. In fact, the design now looked a bit more muscular, even though only a few changes were made to the outer appearance. A twin-port grille, full-width bumpers, beefed-up fender flares, a new aluminum hood with power domes, and up to 20-inch wheels gave the new generation a strong presence.

However, some changes are less due to the optics. For example, the new front end provided more efficient cooling, while the roof and tailgate spoiler were formed in the wind tunnel, thereby improving aerodynamics.

As before, customers could choose from three different cab variants; Regular Cab (single cabin), Double Cab, and Crew Cab. However, the old extended cabin (Extended Cab) has now been replaced by a longer double cabin, which can now actually accommodate up to 5 people.

The crew cabin received larger doors at the rear, which made it easier to get in and out. The rear doors of the double cab were now hinged at the front, which made access in tight spots easier. Also, the new doors were better fitted into the body side, thus reducing wind noise in the cabin.

The Chevy truck continued to be offered with three different length beds: 5 feet, 8 inches; 6 feet, 6 inches; and 8 feet. For the first time, the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab was also available with a longer loading area (6'6").

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

In addition, the tailgate was equipped with an internal torsion bar and rotary dampers, which made it possible to open and close it more smoothly. Also, access to the truck bed was made easier by adding a built-in step in the rear bumper.

Structural changes were also made, which increased the strength of the Chevy pickup Silverado III. Underneath the paintwork, for example, is a fully wrapped, high-strength steel frame made using hydroforming technology.

In addition, the load floor was now made of roll-formed steel, which has added strength and less mass. Further weight savings were also achieved through various aluminum components - such as the bonnet, engine block, and wishbones.

With this generation, Silverado got a revised front and rear suspension and wider wheels, which provided a more comfortable ride and safer handling. Electric power steering improved steering feel and reduced fuel consumption. New four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife rotors now provided a better braking feel.

The Silverado III's interior was completely redesigned, bringing both a more modern look and equipment. In addition to more storage compartments, the dashboard was now more upright and blockier than before - but (despite its simplicity) made the cockpit look a bit more modern overall. The controls were still functionally and logically arranged here so that they could even be operated with work gloves.

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

Models and trim levels included: Work Truck (WT), LS, LT, LTZ, and High Country. The latter celebrated its debut in autumn 2013 and became the new top model in the Silverado series. Equipped with a high level of premium accents and equipment details.

The Silverado 1500 was joined by a total of three new EcoTec engines: a 4.3 l EcoTec3 V6, a 5.3 l EcoTec3 V8 and a 6.2 l EcoTec3 V8. All had a direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and variable valve timing, which brought better fuel efficiency.

Initially, only a 6-speed automatic transmission was responsible for power transmission, later followed by an 8-speed version. The 2014 Silverado 1500's maximum towing capacity increased up to 12,000 pounds (approx. 5.4 tons), while the maximum payload was just over 2100 lbs.

Third Generation Silverado Heavy Duty (HD) Trucks

Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Company

Finally, in early 2014, Chevy released its Silverado Heavy-Duty models’ (2500HD and 3500HD) third generation for the 2015 model year. The new editions of the Silverado HD's offered more than 150 combinations of cabs, platforms, drive trains, and final drive ratios.

They were offered in the versions: Work Truck (WT), LT, and LTZ and in the cab versions: Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab (Regular Cab only in WT and LT versions). Also available here was the Z71 package, which included: Rancho monotube dampers, Hill Descent Control, skid plates, door sill plates with the Z71 logo, and a unique interior.

There were three drive trains to choose from. The standard was a 6.0-liter V8 engine with an output of 268 kW/364 hp and 515 Newton meters of torque. A bi-fuel version of the 6.0L V-8 was also offered, allowing for easy switching between gasoline and compressed natural gas. Anyone who needed more power opted for the Duramax 6.6-liter V8 turbo diesel with 296 kW (402 hp) and 1,037 Nm of torque.

In later model years, this performance was increased. Therefore, the payload and towing capacity could also be significantly increased compared to the HD predecessor models.
