Charging at home for EVs is the trend right now, with multiple companies making different offerings. Lucid is the newest competitor, with a new level 2 wall-charging system.
The convenience that comes with home charging is irresistible. EV owners are ready to spend hundreds of dollars on wall chargers just to have the pleasure of charging their electric cars at their leisure, without having to sit for long periods in an expensive charging station. The chargers' capacities vary greatly, ranging from 120-volt Level 1 chargers which are not that expensive, to more efficient 240-volt Level 2 chargers.
Lucid Motors is better known for the Lucid Air, the longest-range sedan available on the market today. But the company is diversifying its products, trying to offer its customers an integrated EV experience. The new Lucid wall-mounted charger is a level two charging system that can charge 80 miles of range per hour for the Air, according to the company. This $1200 charger can provide 19.2 kW of electrical power, making it comparable to Porsche’s $1586 Wall Charger.
However, interested buyers should be aware that the $1200 could turn into a multi-thousand-dollars investment, due to the permits cost, inspections, installation, and electrical system adaptations, because, in the end, an EV charging system is not a simple plug-in device.
For example, the main requirement before installing an EV charger is that the available electrical circuit should provide 20 percent more power than is required by the charging system. A Level 2 charging that requires 80 amps will need a dedicated 100-amp circuit breaker. So depending on the existing electrical installation, buyers can find themselves obligated to spend a substantial amount of money to readapt their homes’ electrical system.
Other details of Lucid’s wall charger include a 24-foot cable that’s supposed to be thinner and lighter than what the competition is offering. The unit itself comes in a stylish black case and can be installed in the garage or outdoors for those who prefer open-“Air” charging. The system has wifi connectivity, allowing it to receive potential future updates. It also offers bi-directional charging, an extremely useful perk in times of emergency.
In other news, Lucid is offering a new optional cargo capsule and a set of crossbars for the Lucid Air. the carmaker stated that the capsule has a functional, fluid aerodynamic design; it can be opened from either side while offering interior lighting for nighttime as well. The crossbars were tested for 165 pounds; their dimensions are compatible with Yakima bike, surfboard, and kayak mounts. These are two convenient auditions for the luxurious Air EV, especially for owners who are fond of travel and adventure.
