Mercedes-AMG is going electric! Certainly not every performance car fan likes this idea, but the change is inevitable - and has long been initiated. With the Mercedes Vision AMG show car, there is already a concrete preview of AMG's electric future. In mid-May 2022, Mercedes design chief Gordon Wagener posted a teaser image for the first study of the upcoming electric sports car via Instagram
Mercedes-Benz’s performance division AMG will present the first self-developed fully electric model in 2025. AMG is trying to reinvent themselves and they are developing everything from scratch, from the independent AMG.EA platform to a revolutionary drive technology with which they will take performance electromobility to a new level.
Now we can get the first glimpse of AMG's electric future, as Mercedes has pulled the rag from the Vision AMG study. As is typical of AMG, this model with the pure electric drive should also meet all the requirements of a high-performance vehicle.
The four-door Vision AMG show car impressively shows what this electric future could look like in concrete terms. Strictly speaking, the production model expected in 2025 will not be the first all-electric AMG vehicle, because the extremely limited SLS AMG Electric Drive was already available in the past - and the first EQ models with the AMG logo are already available today.
The Design
The design study doesn’t have an interior yet but we can imagine what it will look liike by looking at Mercedes’ EQ line. It will most likely be very stylish and modern looking with many screens. Like all new Mercs, it will also have the most prominent tech features available.
Also on the outside, many elements of the record-breaker Mercedes EQXX are recognizable at first glance. At the same time, the design language of the Vision AMG painted in "Alubeam Silver" is vaguely reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo show car presented in 2013. The overhangs are short, the wheelbase is long and the A-pillar is steeply raked. However, unlike the 2013 study, the Vision AMG is a four-door coupé.
The star-shaped headlights are definitely the highlight at the front. They are intended to look like a three-dimensional Mercedes star and consist of three LED elements on each side, which are optically connected by a light strip.
The Panamericana radiator grille, which is now an integral part of current AMG models, has been carried over into the electric era for the show car. It is optically closed and has illuminated struts. One floor up, an oversized Mercedes star is emblazoned on the hood.
A strip of lights is integrated into the spoiler lip at the rear. Underneath, huge lettering makes it clear that this is an AMG model. The rear with taillights that look like exhaust pipes is particularly interesting.
Anyone who now thinks that the electric study has six tailpipes illuminated in red is certainly not alone. The Germans decided to install six taillights - three per side and, curiously enough, placed extremely far down just above the diffuser - so the analogy with tailpipes is certainly not entirely coincidental. Here, too, small stars indicate the Mercedes brand. The whole thing is combined with an expressive rear diffuser in black.
The concept car is characterized by its flowing, full surfaces. The joints have been reduced to a minimum and the rear and side windows are painted in the body color Alubeam silver. This reinforces the overall impression of a monolithic sculpture.
The Vision AMG also takes up the idea of a particularly streamlined body. The sharply slanted spoiler lip at the rear with an active spoiler also stretches the silhouette visually. There is also a strip of lights at the back, which enables different light installations. Large 22-inch wheels with aero elements and a color scheme inspired by Formula 1 cars also add more character to the study.
The Tech
What is particularly interesting about the Vision AMG is the platform. The AMG.EA platform serves as the technical platform for the electric AMG line, the central element of which is an axial flow electric motor . In combination with a special high-performance high-voltage battery, this engine concept is characterized by power density and torque at a very high level.
The axial flux motor in the core is being developed by the Mercedes subsidiary "YASA" and, despite its compact design, is said to deliver significantly more power than conventional electric motors.
However, AMG still doesn’t specify any numbers at the moment, but there is still a bit of time until 2025. They do promise that it will be a supercar so we can expect huge numbers in the horsepower department. Insiders are even talking about 1000+ hp.
Conclusion
The signs are pointing to fully electric drive at performance companies such as Mercedes-AMG. The first all-electric AMG sports car is due to arrive in 2025. With the Vision AMG, the German company is giving a first glimpse of the electric model, which, with its sportiness and presumably exclusive price, fits in with the new direction of Mercedes as a luxury brand.
We think a battery pack in the car floor and 22-inch wheels in 2025 as an electric high-flyer should seamlessly connect to the great AMG tradition with a classic drive concept. The exciting look at least doesn't let us expect anything else.
It can always be hard to find custom protective equipment that fits your car. If your car is a very rare first edition car like an AMG Mercedes, it’s virtually impossible.
