If rumors are to be believed, the upcoming Mustang will see some of the most radical changes in its 58-year-old history. Perhaps the biggest change, however, will be the addition of a hybrid power-train—a first for the Mustang.
Ford Global Technologies has filed a patent for a “Twin Motor Drive System for Hybrid Electric Vehicle” that would combine a front-wheel-drive system with a rear-wheel-drive system. The application also outlines “methods and systems” for pairing both power-trains and states that this setup will be “particularly advantageous without substantial alteration to the vehicle structure.”
The upcoming seventh-gen Mustang should employ Ford’s new modular platform shared with the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, confirmed by Pedro Maradei, an engineer who was working on the next-gen Mustang.
