Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years

Volkswagen is launching its most powerful model, the Golf R20, as a celebration of 20 years of the Golf R32.

For its 20th anniversary, the Volkswagen Golf R will celebrate with a special-edition model. To mark the occasion, the German automaker will release the Mk 8 Golf R 20 Years edition, an upgrade on the company's current most powerful Golf-branded hot hatchback.

The limited-production model is expected to include a more powerful version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine as well as a number of tweaks aimed at making it stand out from the regular Golf R line.

The engine of the new version produces 329 horsepower, a 14-horsepower gain over the U.S.-spec car's 315 hp. When you start the Golf R 20 Years special edition, the engine revs to 2500 rpm—a feature created just to make more noise.

It was 20 years ago that the first-ever R-badged Volkswagen Golf hit the market. It was based on the then-new Mk 4 Golf hatchback.

Volkswagen has not yet disclosed details about the U.S. version of the Golf R 20 Years, still, it will not be available until a few months after the European version is released.

Of course, there's still plenty we don't know about the Golf R 20 Years.  However, if VW can deliver a vehicle that rewards the brand's enthusiasts with some new performance tweaks and special accessories, it might be able to pull off a victory in a very competitive marketplace.
