Volkswagen is rolling out a new generation of its MEB electric vehicle platform.
The Volkswagen Group has announced a new EV platform, called MEB+, which continues its strategy to expand into the premium market and offers impressive range and charging times. The updated Volkswagen MEB+ platform is a high-tech solution for electric vehicle charging which is aimed to reduce charging times and provide longer ranges for customers. To achieve this, VW has opted for a 400-volt system instead of an 800-volt system used by Hyundai and Kia. This means that each vehicle will require less energy for charging and therefore can travel further between charges.
Volkswagen says that the changes to its updated MEB platform will allow for charging speeds between 175-200 kWh, up from 135-170 kW for the current version. This upgraded platform has also been designed to achieve a maximum range of approximately 435 miles (700 km).
The MEB+ platform has been designed with new faster charging and a longer range in mind, with a focus on optimal performance in the real world. This new second-generation MEB battery uses newly developed battery cells sourced from Salzgitter, Germany’s leading battery factory in addition to a Swedish plant operated by Northvolt. The automaker aims to first use the new platform on an electric compact SUV, similar in size to the Tiguan.
These changes are expected to happen over time—the company plans on continuing to support the current model through 2025 before moving onto the new platform—and will likely be accompanied by more frequent updates as well.
