Dallara AV-21 was revealed as the World’s fastest autonomous race car, courtesy of the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) and of course, Luminar advanced Lidar.
The reveal took place at the 2022 LA Auto Show, ushering in a new era in car racing. The Dallara AV-21 is the result of a combined effort of the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) and the automotive technology company Luminar.
There’s no denying that Autonomous car technology is taking increasingly larger strides since the development of more advanced Lidar systems. And a car that can go on itself 192.2 mph on a straight line and 173 mph on an oval track is the perfect proof that we’re on the doorsteps of a completely autonomous transportation system.
Three years ago, IAC's and Luminar embarked on this journey, where they succeeded in replacing Luminar’s R&D Hydra sensors with new and more advanced Iris sensors. The new sensor will be officially used in 2023 in the race series. Both companies consider the results of this experiment to be extremely beneficial for the development of autonomous technology in regular passenger cars, as they allowed car producers to push the limits of the technology more than in any other regular development program.
“We are working with university teams around the world to accelerate the pace of technology development and commercialization of ADAS and autonomous systems, with a focus on high-speed automation,” said Paul Mitchell, president, Indy Autonomous Challenge. “Luminar is now the exclusive lidar sensor technology supplier of the IAC for the next three years due to its commitment to make autonomy safe and ubiquitous through its rapidly growing industry partnerships, including seven of the top 10 global automakers.”
