British Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited

The luxury British brand Rolls-Royce now belongs to BMW, and they are finally presenting their first all-electric vehicle. The Spectre is the quietest ever Rolls Royce, and that’s a challenging mission to accomplish with this brand.

Charles Rolls, the co-founder of the British luxury brand Rolls Royce, recognized 120 years ago that the electric motor is the ideal drive for a car, provided the charging infrastructure is sufficiently developed. Until then, the British developers had made enormous efforts to minimize the annoying disadvantages of the combustion engine, such as noise and vibrations, as much as possible.

Now the makers have decided the time is right and presented the Spectre, the first fully electric Rolls Royce. And not only that. Rolls Royce has also confirmed that by the end of 2030, the entire product portfolio will be fully electric.

The Tech

all-electric RollsRolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited

About a year ago, there was the first information about an all-electric Rolls-Royce. The Spectre, the English luxury brand's first high-performance BEV, is now scheduled for the first delivery in the fourth quarter of 2023. Before that, however, the prototypes have to go through a marathon test program.

The marathon program means that the test vehicles will cover no less than two and a half million kilometers, simulating around 400 years of use by a Rolls-Royce. That is over one and a half million miles.

From the Arctic Circle, with temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit, to Africa, where temperatures of up to 140 degrees can occur in the shade, the vehicles must prove their proverbial quality.

However, more than half of the route is tested where a Rolls is typically moved: on the Côte d'Azur, where, among other things, the planar suspension system for the Spectre is being optimized. The Spectre should recognize a curve before it is driven through and adjust the dampers and all-wheel steering in good time so that the luxury ship masters the curve as if on rails.

The Design

The posh coupe will be the successor to the legendary Phantom coupe and is based on the aluminum spaceframe architecture. The mixing platform is currently also used by Phantom, Cullinan and Ghost.

As a coupe, the Spectre has two traditionally rear-hinged doors for ease of entry. As is typical for Rolls-Royce, an umbrella is in the door opening. The body will be over 17 ft and weigh almost three tons. At a good 6.5 ft width and 5.1 ft high, the four individual seats should be comfortable to sit in, in line with the Rolls-Royce philosophy that space is the most incredible luxury.

The Power

PowerRolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited

In the past, Rolls-Royce always kept the engine power a secret and only answered "sufficient" to relevant questions. Today they are more willing to share information. The drive power should be 430 kilowatts and bring 900 Newton meters of torque to the wheels.

The company also talked about 0 to 60 mph sprint acceleration timing, and that’s a first. Most people wouldn’t do that or care about it with a Rolls Royce, but if you really want to do it, it should be done in 4.5 seconds, and that’s extremely quick for a vast road-going ship.

The British specify the range as 325 miles with a consumption of 21.5 kWh/100 km, according to the WLTP. Most range tests are done on a computer, but Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure conducts tests based on vehicles’ real-world driving situations.

However, all of these values can still be adjusted slightly until the tests are completed in the second quarter of 2023. The British do not say precisely how big the Spectre battery will be. But if you do the math, around 110 kilowatt hours would be sufficient as a power package, but they might, of course, use a bigger one. After all, it is the Rolls Royce, the pinnacle of luxury.

Conclusion

According Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited

According to the manufacturer, the Rolls-Royce Spectre is the Rolls-Royce 3.0 due to its fully electric drive train and decentralized intelligence. You can get excited because it can be ordered right now. The start of delivery of the first vehicles is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.

The British do not specify a price, only that the Spectre should be located between the Cullinan and the Phantom. So it will probably start at just under 400,000 dollars. But when it comes to the purchase price of a Rolls-Royce, the following always applies: if you have to ask what it costs, you probably can't afford it!
