After the starting signal two years ago, Sony is again using the CES in Las Vegas and is already releasing its second electric car. The entry of the Japanese technology group into the market for urban mobility solutions seems a done deal. What's in the new concept study of the VISION-S 02?

As early as 2020, Sony announced that it would launch its own interpretation of future mobility with the VISION-S initiative. In the same year, the manufacturer started with a first vehicle prototype and carried out the first road tests and 5G road tests.

With the VISION-S 02, the Japanese are now releasing a new prototype that is based on the same platform as the predecessor VISION-S 01 and is supposed to shine with new entertainment experiences, a large interior and space for up to seven people.

One thing is also clear to us: the two prototypes are not just pure gimmicks. Sony has announced that it will be founding its own subsidiary, Sony Mobility Inc., this spring, which will be specifically responsible for the electric vehicle market. It starts!

With a length of 192.7 inches, a width of 76 inches, and a height of 65 inches, the VISION-S 02 is a compact E-SUV and is therefore just as big & tall as its predecessor. According to Sony, it weighs 5467 lbs. 

In terms of drive, the Japanese rely on all-wheel drive, both axles are each driven by a motor with 200 kW or 272 hp. In terms of range and expected prices, Sony is keeping a low profile, there is no information there yet. However, speed junkies should be interested in the fact that the top speed of more than 115 mph has already been revealed.

With the VISION-S 02, Sony relies on a large number of sensors that are installed 360 degrees around the vehicle to detect and analyze the environment in real-time. In addition to high-resolution CMOS image sensors, as known from digital cameras, LiDAR sensors are used, which capture space in all three dimensions. 

The safety system also interacts intuitively with the driver and provides a current status of the environment at all times. For example, if there is an emergency vehicle around, it is reported to the driver immediately. Future, here we come!
