Shelby 1300-HP Shelby Mustang GT500 Code Red Revealed as Limited Edition

Shelby American has uncovered the new GT500 Code Red this week, a more powerful version of the current Mustang GT500.

The Code Red was entirely based on its sibling the current-generation Mustang GT500. But the carmaker made sure to unleash the full potential of the 5.2-liter V8- engine by installing a pair of turbochargers instead of the current supercharger.

Nelson's Racing Engines was tasked with reinventing this 5.2-liter V8. So instead of a single fuel feed, they had the great idea of installing a dual fuel feed, allowing the introduction of special racing fuel when needed. For example, when using E85, the engine’s output goes up from 1000 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque to 1300 horsepower and 1000 pound-feet.

Shelby American was pretty straightforward when describing the full potential of its new car: "While not street legal, it's very capable at moderate speeds in most any curve. But when the turbos spool up, the car is best enjoyed moving straight ahead."[i]

To handle all that power, the company has to strengthen the transmission setup. They have also added a one-piece driveshaft, Shelby/Baer brakes, and rotors.

The wheels also had to be modified; the Mustang GT500 Code Red will ride on 20-inch wheels in front with Pirelli P Zero tires and Nitto NY555R drag radials in back.

On the design aspect, the Code red will differentiate itself with a new badging, and a carbon-fiber hood.

The production of this special edition GT500 is limited to 30 units. And buying one would set you back $209,995 with an additional $80,000 if you wish to get the donor car.
