The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as one of the safest cars out there, granting it the revered Top Safety Pick+ award.
The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific organization that monitors car designs and makes sure that they all meet the minimum safety requirements to ensure drivers' and pedestrians' safety on the road.
The organization declared that the new Mercedes C-Class was awarded the Top Safety Pick+ after meeting all criteria, with two variations of headlights and two different front crash prevention systems available.
The C-Class offers two headlight designs, the standard static LED headlights and the optional curve-adaptive headlights, these designs were rated good and acceptable respectively. And those are the two required ratings in order to get the highest award.
The car also passed six different crashworthiness evaluations that included driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.
The C-class passed all of them with flying colors, winning the Top Safety Pick award in the process. And getting an Advanced or Superior front crash prevention system in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations further bolstered the car’s position as one of the safest cars in America.

Tests of the braking systems were also successful. The standard Active Brake Assist front crash prevention system received a superior rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation and an advanced rating in the daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. While the optional Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function was rated as Superior in both tests.
It’s worth noting that the Toyota Tundra and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 received the same award this year. The IIHS has already revealed the list of the safest vehicles in 2022, a list that the Hyundai Motor Group dominated.
Things are bound to change in 2023. The IIHS said that there will be some new tests, like a new nighttime pedestrian crash prevention test. Other existing tests will see some improvements, notably, the side impact evaluation will be executed at a higher speed and with a heavier barrier.
