Toyota Motor Corporation

With the new top model Toyota Tundra Capstone, the manufacturer is crowning its series. Equipped with a hybrid V6 engine, whopping 443 hp and lots of luxury. The third generation of the Japanese full-size truck Tundra was presented to us only recently.

Now Toyota wants to be at the top of the high-end segment of the pickup market and is presenting us with a new luxury top variant that goes by the name "Capstone". The new luxury model is only offered in the double cabin configuration (Crew Max) with a short 5.5 foot bed/loading area.

The Design

Toyota Motor Corporation

The basis of the Toyota Tundra Capstone is the double cab version of Tundra, the Crew Max. From the outside it is recognizable by a special, chrome-plated diamond radiator grille, and it stands on the largest wheels that Toyota has offered for the Tundra so far.

Plenty of chrome and add-on parts painted in the vehicle color form the visual finish, while electrically extending running boards make it easier to get on the big truck. The all-new top of the range Capstone offers a premium collection of features and upgrades for those looking to enhance their trucking experience.

The Highlights

  • Massive 22-inch chrome wheels;
  • Unique grille design with chrome mesh pattern;
  • Chromed bumper inserts, door handles, mirror flaps and Tundra lettering on the tailgate;
  • Automatic running boards;
  • Electric bed step;
  • Height-adjustable air suspension with load leveling;
  • Available paint finishes: Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red and Blueprint.

The Interior

Toyota Motor Corporation

Exclusively for the Tundra Capstone, Toyota supplies an interior with semi-aniline leather in white color, and the seats are air-conditioned. Also exclusive to this model is the acoustic glass, which is designed to noticeably reduce interior noise.

The decorative elements on the center console and dashboard are made of dark walnut wood, an illuminated Capstone logo is also one of the special details of this model. The large panoramic glass roof is also standard.

When it comes to assistance and multimedia equipment, the Tundra Capstone is of course fully equipped for the series. This includes the new Toyota audio multimedia system with JBL sound system, which comes up with a new voice control and, if required, provides a WiFi hotspot for up to five devices.

Several cameras on the outside allow an all-round view at the central display, including a bird's-eye view. The Towing Technology Pack is standard on the Capstone and includes Trailer Reverse Assist, which makes trailer maneuvering easier, and Straight Ahead Assist, which ensures trailers are backing up in a straight line on the pick-up.

The Power

Toyota Motor Corporation

The pickup Toyota Tundra was, is and will remain a tough one - the new luxurious top variant Capstone doesn't change that. Neither performance nor its robustness have fallen victim to luxury here.

The new Capstone is powered by the impressive new i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain (biturbo V6 engine), which delivers a whopping 443 hp and 790 Nm of torque . A 10-speed automatic transmission, which is designed for maximum performance and efficiency, takes care of the power transmission.

The new Tundra also features a fully-wrapped high-strength steel frame, new Sheet-Molded Compound ( SMC ) bed construction and reinforced aluminum cross members. Equipped in this way, the new top model shines with a maximum payload of around 1483 lbs and a trailer load of 4.7 tons.

Conclusion

Toyota Motor Corporation

Capstone is the English word for the keystone, which is inserted as the top element in a vault or a brick arch. And so the new Tundra model of the same name marks the culmination of the series. With an all-inclusive equipment and special exclusive details such as the white leather interior, the Tundra Capstone will in future also attract customers who are particularly luxury-oriented. Also, its V6 hybrid drive is unusual for a large American pickup.

You can already guess it, because luxury is known to have its price. The new Toyota Tundra Capstone starts at a whopping $73,530 , more than twice as much as the base version Tundra SR, which is available from $35,950. Even the top trim levels of a Ford F-150 or a Chevy Silverado 1500 as well as the Ram 1500 all start below the $70,000 mark.
