2024 Volvo Embla EV SUV Everything We Know

The Volvo XC90 is preparing to take a sharp turn for its 3rd generation update. Volvo it preparing to re-launch it as a luxury EV, with more wagon looks. Taking its place as Volvo’s flagship. And this time bearing a real name.

CEO Håkan Samuelsson has previously talked about the car’s new name, stating that it will be called Embla, a distinctive name inspired from old Norse mythology, the new name is roughly the equivalent of the biblical Eve, a symbolic choice for the brands new launch into the electrical age.

Embla is inspired from the Volvo Recharge Concept, and presumably it’s just the first of a series of cars that will all take the Recharge concept car as a starting point. It’s obvious that the 2021 concept has firmly taken its place as the company’s main inspiration.

The new Embla will have a long sleek wagon-body, making ample room for the dedicated new long-range battery pack, necessary to power the four electric motors.

The expected general shape of the car is expressed in a late render, showing the brands signature Thor's Hammer headlight taking its place on a smooth fascia. With long vertical taillights framing the rear tailgate, giving the car the classical Volvo wagon design.

The exterior body features pieces of the latest Volvo technology, like the lidar sensor that gives the Embla advanced safety and driver-assistance capabilities, Volvo calls it "Ride,” similar to GM's Super Cruise system.

For the interior, Volvo has chosen a "minimalist Scandinavian chic." Manufactured from natural and sustainable materials, the dashboard features a large 15-inch touchscreen, the interior also benefits from the new electric set-up as it allows it to be more spacious, hosting more passenger and cargo space, even a third row of seating, expanded even more with the optional glass-roof.

The New technologies extend to the car’s interior, in which we can find driver-monitoring cameras further enhancing the car’s safety features. As we mentioned earlier, the dashboard is dominated by a highly advanced touchscreen, android operated and very similar to that of the Polestar 2 EV. It should be compatible with Apple CarPlay, but we still have to wait to see if that goes smoothly, especially after the issues we witnessed when Polestar tried incorporation it in its android touchscreen.

Embla is expected to be produced at Ridgeville, South Carolina, with most of Volvo’s new EVs, the release schedule is still anyone’s guess. The only thing we have is Volvo’s promise to have a production EV model ready by 2022 end, we can only hope the Embla will be the one.

A third row of seating, that means an increased chance of dirty incidents, and more required effort to watch over all that vast seating space, but with Coverking you don’t have to worry about all that!
