Stellantis Hurricane Inline 6 Engine Jeep Ram Dodge Chrysler

Electric vehicles are taking a long time to be widely adopted. So, in the meantime, more attention should be given to what companies plan to offer over the next couple of decades while the great transition happens.

Stellantis has said that by 2030, 50% of their cars would be battery-electric. The company realized its current internal-combustion engine technology wouldn't cut it for the other half of its range, that’s why it began developing a clean-sheet powertrain solution in 2019. The Hurricane is an impressive result.

The Hurricane will be the name for a line of twin-turbo, 3.0-liter I-6 engines, with standard output ("SO") and high-output ("HO") versions. It will produce more than 400 horsepower and more than 450 lb-ft of torque, with maximum power at 5,800 rpm. High output variants will produce more than 500 HP and more than 475 lb-ft of torque," with maximum power at 6,100 rpm.

The company says its new engines maintain at least 90 percent of peak torque from 2,350 rpm to redline. "The Hurricane twin-turbo is a no-compromise engine that delivers better fuel economy and an important reduction in greenhouse gases without asking our customers to give up performance," said Micky Bly, Stellantis Head of Propulsion Systems.

Stellantis designed the Hurricane engine line to meet all current North American emissions requirements and engineered it with increased future flexibility. The engine's principal market will be North America, with limited exports to other worldwide markets.

The Hurricane features a dual overhead cam design with direct injection and individual cooling systems for the turbos, separate from the engine cooling circuit. During harsh driving circumstances, an oil pan with an auxiliary pump that can circulate the oil.

Production of the engine is already underway, with pre-production engines undergoing tests in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, Mexico, where the spray-bore technology is implemented. The factory has the potential to create up to 250,000 new Hurricane engines per year, with full production expected to commence in the coming months.

Stellantis did not mention any specific vehicles during its presentation of the Hurricane engine, but brand announcements will be made soon about vehicles that will feature the new engine. However, we do know that the company's new STLA Large and STLA Frame vehicle platforms will feature the Hurricane engine family.

The Hurricane engine was built to last, so you can be confident that it will continue powering your truck or SUV well into the future. And that's a good thing, these days, most people aren't looking for new vehicles every few years, they often want to keep them well past the standard trade-in mileage.
