Chevy Silverado EV will be Neither Body on Frame nor Unibody

Automaker General Motors has a history of making substantial investments in new technologies, and the recently announced investment for the development of new electric vehicle (EV) technology reflects this commitment to staying on the cutting edge. General Motors is reported to be developing the next Chevrolet Silverado EV which will be built on an all-new vehicle architecture that integrates the battery as part of the chassis.

General Motors' (GM's) new Battery Electric Truck platform 'BT1', which underpins the automaker's all-electric truck and van programs, isn't a unibody vehicle like we typically see nowadays. According to GM. Nichole Kraatz, the automaker's Chief Engineer in Battery Electric Trucks, stated that General Motors has "created a new category of vehicle that does not use body-on-frame construction".

Since their initial development, body-on-frame construction is common in full-size pickup trucks. Typically, larger and heavier vehicles use body-on-frame construction because they are stronger and offer more interior space. Though the pickup truck market has long preferred body-on-frame construction for durability and capability, the Chevrolet Silverado EV deviates from that formula. Its maximum towing capacity is 10,000 pounds, and its 1,300-pound payload is considerably higher than the gas Silverado's 2,300-pound capacity. And because of its strength, Chevrolet has witnessed exceptional demand for the truck.

The automaker’s team has not given it an official name—though they are considering UltiBody. The term UltiBody refers to the Ultium technology that forms part of the body structure.

As a whole, GM has made impressive strides at creating a viable road to electric vehicle production and sales. the future looks bright for Chevy’s EV trucks, As the company continues to refine the processes for designing, engineering, and manufacturing them.
