The experimentAbarth Uses Facial Recognition To Assess Driver Enjoyment

The experiment was conducted on the Mallory Park race track.

Abarth has always focused on providing a more exciting driving experience. The brand has relied on facial recognition technology to monitor occupants and their emotions as they drive to study how drivers behave behind the wheel.

From Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, Dr. Dale Esliger assisted the automaker in their study. The concept was simple: Abarth would present drivers with a series of driving situations and then ask them to rate their experience on a scale from 1 to 10. While drivers were engaged in these tasks, they were also being filmed for facial recognition purposes.

"Research within this remit is limited, however, I suspect it will be an area within the automotive industry that will continue to be explored, as manufacturers strive to improve the driving experiences of their cars,"Dr. Esliger clarified.

Using this technology, Abarth can understand what drivers like about their cars and what they don't like about them. This information can then be used to improve future models and make them better for customers. Through each generation of the company’s models, passion has been enhanced while maintaining a focus on everyday usability. Concerning the current range, it features a variety of different engines powering cars from city and coupes to hot hatches.

The automaker has been working on a new model based on the 500e, which is supposed to be a subcompact electric car. The Italian brand's president said that the project was on track, with final testing at an advanced stage. The vehicle is expected to feature a revised suspension, tweaked brakes and possibly a more powerful engine. A rumor indicates that the car will accelerate from 0-62 mph in under seven seconds, but not much is known about pricing or when it might arrive.[1]
