Lamborghini is saying goodbye to the Aventador, the last ever unit of the legendary icon came out of the production line this week in a special ceremony.

People are already talking about the Aventador’s replacement, a natural reaction we might say, “The king is dead, long live the king” but before that; we can at least explore the legacy that the Aventador left behind.

The supercar has outsold all of Lambo's previous V12, with a whopping 11,465 units since its launch, so any replacement has some big shoes to fill.

A replacement that will definitely take a different route than its predecessors, Lamborghini is slowly entering the electric age; the next generation of sports cars will be at least hybrids, effectively ending a history of awesome V12 beasts. “The V12 engine has been part of Lamborghini’s heritage since the company’s earliest days,” explains boss Stephan Winkelmann, “the beating heart of models from Miura to Diablo, Countach to Murcielago.”

Back to the Aventador, the story started back in 2011 following the eclipse of the Murcielago, the car entered the stage with guns blazing, sporting a longitudinally positioned rear engine, 700 metric horsepower, four-wheel-drive – packed a brand new 6.5-liter V12.

What makes the Aventador so special is that the car was built from scratch, taking nothing from its predecessors, except the signature aggressiveness of a traditional Lamborghini. The ISR gearbox, the carbon-fiber monocoque, the unique angular design, and the scissor-opening doors all made the car an overwhelming design masterpiece impossible to ignore.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Lamborghini’s Ad Personam department gave all new Aventador owners more than 200 customization possibilities to make their cars even more unique and personal than they already were. Customers were apparently delighted by that, explaining why 85 percent of all Aventadors have some kind of customization on them.

The 2011 Aventador had a number of equally impressive siblings over the years, first, the Coupe, the Roadster, and then the Super Veloce all had their moment of glory, with each version adding more power, more aero, and less weight. The final version of the Aventador was the ‘Ultimae’ or the final act packing all the greatest features of the previous versions, getting off the world stage in the best way possible. The Lamborghini Aventador was one of a kind, now we can only hope to see another icon that can truly fill the void it's leaving behind.
