Audi Pickup Truck Rumor Surprise Announcement
In a brief press statement, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann gave obvious hints that his company is in the process of developing a pick-up truck. He even stated that official announcements about this particular project may happen sooner than we think.
This surprising piece of news had contrasted impacts on the audience. The most notable reaction came from Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark, who said “I would not love to have one (a truck) in the Bentley portfolio” and that’s not surprising, as the luxury brands are usually very careful about their image as high-class car producers, and they try to avoid sending the wrong message about themselves and their products.
Audi’s new venture doesn’t really fit into its overall strategy, as it worked hard and invested a lot of time and money into developing electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems. So, we still need more clarifications about the motives behind this new project, especially knowing that Audi could benefit from its ongoing partnership with Ford through Volkswagen for the development of the new Amarok and Ranger models. Which could theoretically eliminate the need for developing an entirely new platform for a new truck.
Logically, Audi will take Volkswagen’s Amarok as the starting point and make it their own by adding improved tech and luxury materials inside the cabin, elevating its status from a rugged hard duty truck to a classier one. On the exterior it’s really hard to predict what would happen but at least we’re sure to see the famous four rings slapped on an Amarok like truck
When it comes to the powertrain, Audi has a number of choices. But most likely it will use one of Volkswagen Group's electric vehicle platforms as that would be more in line with the brands overall strategy, and with the new trend of electric tucks in which we can find the F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T.
Audi should be really careful about the new project because the history of luxury brands venturing into truck territory is not very encouraging, we have to many bad examples like Lincoln’s Blackwood and Mark LT, and Mercedes’ X-Class. But on the other hand, we have some very good exceptions, such as GMC’s Denali models.
