BMW is in the first stages of developing an M version of the new BMW iX.
The new development was discovered by CarBuzz investigators. BMW has yet to announce it officially, but the company has already trademarked the name “iX M”, a move that can mean only one thing; a performance version of the Electric iX is on the way. Before we get ahead of ourselves, we should note that the filing is very recent, with the registration published on November 24, so it’s still a long way before the BMW iX M appears in public.
The M division of BMW was trying its best to ignore the ongoing electric transition, trying to keep combustion engines alive for as long as it could. But with the development of this electric M model, we can finally say that the German carmaker is giving in to the inevitable. And has started preparing seriously for a future where electric cars are the norm, not the exception.
Going back to the iX, the car was released last March, revealing some impressive performance figures. The M60 trim, for example, which is the top trim, makes 610 hp and 811 lb-ft. Giving it the ability to do the 0-60 mph run in 3.6 seconds and keep going to reach a top speed of 155 mph.

The question now is how better will the iX M be?
Well, as usual, the public will have extremely high expectations from an M model, and that will constitute a unique challenge for the developers in the M department, considering the weight and the size of the electric SUV. Only time will tell how good it will be to drive an M electric SUV.
Several advanced new technologies are currently under development at BMW, and some of those will definitely find their way to the final iX M design. Individual wheel control (standing donuts) is one of those.
BMW already confessed that electric powertrain technologies open new possibilities that are simply impossible using conventional ICE technology, and the company will take full advantage of that to produce competitive and attractive car models in the future.
Frank van Meel, BMW M boss, sounds very optimistic about the future of his department, promising to keep making exciting car models, no matter the powertrain. “Whatever the powertrain, you should always be able to drive our cars and know they are M cars.”

A lot of hardcore M cars fans are still reluctant to accept the transition to a fully electric powertrain, and that will add a lot of pressure on the iX M, as it will be the first taste of what would an electric M model look like. If successful, future electric M cars will certainly be easier to swallow.
