BMW Sees Danger in Abandoning the Internal Combustion Engine
Ask any automaker and they would tell you that going electric is the future. Not just for domestic vehicles, but global markets as well. However, we’ve started to realize that it’s not as easy in practice as it might have seemed a few years ago. While things like strategic partnerships and even promising start-ups definitely help to make electrification easier in the cause, there are several challenges automakers face, two main obstacles standing in the way – whether our electrical infrastructure can manage it, and then there's the question of cost. With the industry facing slow sales around the world, Oliver Zipse, BMW AG’s head of development, says car companies may be pushing too hard to promote EVs. That's why BMW prefers to take a more cautious approach.
BMW Sees Danger in Abandoning the Internal Combustion Engine
The market is a hungry beast. It's always moving, always consuming, and you need to be sure that it has just the right product at just the right time.
Although a lot of automakers will likely be building more electric vehicles in the future, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse confirms that they will not abandon their internal combustion engine (ICE) roots just yet.
The reason is simple: if there are any issues with the production or availability of charging infrastructure or raw materials, this could cause serious problems for companies that rely solely on electric car sales. Zipse believes automakers must offer a gasoline alternative so they don't bail on the market altogether. That's why the ICE must stay.
EVs are only the next step in vehicle technology. EVs have a role to play, but they won’t be able to address all of the problems that come with personal transportation. We still need to find solutions for less-affluent drivers, especially those in remote areas or who don’t have access to public transportation. Until then, ICE will probably stick around for a while.
