The iconic DeLorean is returning in a modern form, new powertrain and a new name; the DeLorean Alpha5 EV. And it looks ready for the scheduled august debut.
The new DeLorean Alpha5 carries a heavy legacy. Forty years after the original DeLorean went on sale, we can see that the new one follows its footsteps by adopting the trick door design. But other than that, it’s hard to see any other similarities.
The body design is much less boxy, with many curves and no straight lines. Things are completely different under the hood, too. The Alpha5 will rely on electric power rather than the old-fashioned rear-mounted six-cylinder of the original DeLorean. Although the company is still tight-lipped about the actual performance numbers, we can safely speculate that the car will have 300 miles of driving range and 155 mph top speed.
The DeLorean Alpha5 has an attractive aerodynamic shape, emphasized by the Italdesign-penned bodywork. And even if it’s a two-door-only car, the opening is large enough to offer easy access to the rear seats. Another prominent detail that we cannot ignore is the oversized rear fenders.
As for the interior, the car follows the trend of the minimalistic design, centered entirely around two large screens, one as an instrument panel for the driver and the second as a central infotainment console.
Even if the original DeLorean didn’t have great success in the past, it has captivated the minds with its unique design. That’s the power of innovation.
