EVgo, GM Activate Plug and Charge Across EVgo Network
Plug and Charge is a new EV charging feature offered by EVgo and General Motors. It will be available for all GM EVs with DC fast-charging capability.
EVs’ meteoric rise is impressive, but the charging infrastructure is still struggling to keep up. Automakers and technology startups have realized this fact, that’s why we’re seeing a growing number of collaboration initiatives to create innovative, efficient, and user-friendly charging networks.
The latest EVgo GM collaboration falls neatly into that category, the two companies have created a new charging system across their network. “Plug and Charge” eliminates the need for credit cards or cumbersome and complicated phone apps. After a one-time subscription, EV owners will be able to simply plug in their cars and start charging immediately.
Plug and Charge service represents a new approach to the charging experience in the country, it transfers the burden of the charging experience from the customer to the car itself. Those interested should initially have an EVgo account, active OnStar connected services, and the GM brand app (myChevrolet, myGMC, myCadillac). After that, they are good to go, simply plugging and charging.
EVgo made sure to enhance the security features on their system before launching the new service, to avoid any issues or inconveniences in a service where the main purpose is to enhance and facilitate the charging experience.
Ivo Steklac, Chief Technology Officer at EVgo. Had a few words to say about the Plug and Charge service: “At its core, this latest iteration of the Auto charge technology is a customer convenience feature that can save drivers time by simplifying the fast-charging experience while maintaining a high level of security and protection”, he added, “In collaboration with GM, EVgo continues to implement new technology across multiple hardware and software platforms to enhance the charging experience.”
However, some EV models won’t be illegible, CHAdeMO for example does not have a unique identifier, a detail that would automatically exclude it from the service. Some CCS vehicles are excluded as well, due to vehicle manufacturer limitations.
