Facelifted mercedes eqa prototype wears camo balaclava for icy winter test
The newly updated Mercedes EQA is undergoing cold weather testing, preparing the small electric SUV for the real world.
The Mercedes EQA is not that old, but the German carmaker sees that its smallest electric SUV needs some makeup already, even before its launch in the US. The new design looks almost ready as the car visits the Arctic Circle to perform some cold weather tests.
The EQA isn’t exactly an electric role model, unlike its larger EQE and EQS siblings, the crossover was built on an adapted combustion engine platform, the same one used in the gas-powered GLA. In fact, other than the grill and some modern lighting details, the metal body of the two vehicles looks almost identical.
The updated EQA is still keeping some secrets, the camouflage on the front hides the new grille design. But based on what we saw on almost all new Mercedes electric models, the new grill will most likely feature the smooth tri-star pattern.
Changes to the rear will be minimal as well, camouflage indicates that these design changes will only affect the taillights, probably changing their configuration without affecting their dimensions.
The most exciting news about the new EQA is the fact that it will run on the most powerful drivetrain dedicated to small SUVs. Based on the “EQA350” and “4Matic” badges we see on the back, the car will be making 222 hp (225 PS) EQA300 or 284 hp (288 PS) EQA350, on an all-wheel setup.
The new EQA will make its debut next year in Europe, but just like the current model, there’s no indication of whether it will come to the US or not.
