The first Faraday EPA numbers are out, promising 381 miles of range in their FF 91 model.

The startup Faraday is having a bumpy takeoff, riddled with financial problems that are slowing down its development. But some good news is in order this week; the official EPA estimates confirm that the FF 91 model can go for 381 miles on a single charge while riding on 22-inch wheels, a promising number that puts it on par with other established EV carmakers.

The first conclusion we get out of this is that the Faraday team didn’t over-promise when advertising their cars, the company initially said that the FF 91 will have a 378 miles range on a single charge, three miles less than the EPA rate.

However, one interesting detail caught the attention of observers, the EPA rating specified that the 381 miles range concerns models with a 142-kWh battery pack, which is way above the 130-kWh pack announced by the company on various occasions, notability during last February’s official launch and on their website as well. It’s only a matter of speculation to figure out why Faraday decided to increase the battery capacity, was it only to meet the range expectations? Or is there another reason?

Faraday is still inviting EV lovers to pre-order their first FF 91 Futurist now; the model is the only trim still having pre-order slots open. The FF 91 Futurist promises 1,050 horsepower coming from 3 motors, a power that can propel the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in under 2.4 seconds. The pre-order requires a small deposit of $1,500, a fraction of the $180,000 required to purchase the car. Faraday also promises to launch a smaller model called FF 91, with a price of $120,000, probably coming with a smaller battery.

The company now needs to overcome a lot of financial challenges before putting their cars on the production line, but otherwise, the cars look very promising and the technical aspect of the project looks healthy, CEO Carsten Breitfeld looked optimistic when he described the EPA numbers as “a huge step in getting this car in the hands of our users,”
