Fedex Test Autonomous Drone Cargo Deliveries Next Year 2022-03-30

U.S.-based delivery company FedEx Corp announced on Wednesday that its subsidiary, FedEx Express, will begin testing the Elroy Air Chaparral autonomous air cargo system.

Elroy Air, a California-based air cargo company, has launched the Chaparral, an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft that can lift 300 lbs. to 500 lbs. of cargo and deliver it by air up to 300 miles.

A diverse range of legacy aviation and automotive industry players including Boeing (BA.N), Embraer (EMBR3.SA), Airbus (AIR.PA), United Airlines (UAL.O), Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), and Stellantis (STLA.MI) are investing into developing this electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL)  aircraft.

If other companies follow suit, this could mean more options for businesses to ship packages and a new way for FedEx to cut delivery times and costs. If perfected, fleets of semi-autonomous drones could deliver everything from prescription drugs to Amazon purchases.
