In an official statement, Toyota announced that it’s joining efforts with the Japanese space agency to develop a cruiser that would explore the moon’s surface with the goal of facilitating human settlements there for a first phase , and then on Mars later.
Toyota’s new venture fits right into its policy of diversification that it’s was following for decades; they have tried various markets and now they decided to lunch themselves into space. “Toyota has vehicles almost everywhere. “But this is about taking our cars to somewhere we have never been.” Said Shinichiro Noda, a Toyota engineer.
It would be a small cruise for a car but a giant leap for the car industry, and the vehicle that would take the honour is baptized as Lunar Cruiser as a reference to the iconic land cruiser manufactured by Toyota, and it’s being developed by The Japanese aerospace agency. With the launch date set for the late 2020s.
The philosophy behind this new project is that cars have always been a safe environment for humans to perform regular life activities such as eating, working sleeping and more. so why not take that to space?
Toyota is not alone on this, it was joined by a number of contractors tasked with the development of the robotic components of the vehicle, the crucial tools that allow it to perform various research and exploration duties once it reaches the moon’s surface.
Sadly, settling Mars surface may not happen in our life time and our dreams of cruising through its deserts may just remain … dreams.
