Ford is bringing back the Maverick. This time as a compact, powerful full hybrid pickup with lots of clever technology and functions.

The Maverick name has been used by Ford before. It appeared in 1969-1977 as a compact sedan model on the US market for the first time. Then from 1993 to 2007 in Europe, the same name was given to a SUV model.

Now we are being presented with another Maverick, but this time as a very special kind of compact pickup truck. Ford is bringing out a vehicle that is likely to have its competitor Hyundai Santa Cruz in its sights.

Just a few weeks ago, the Ford F-150 Lightning (electric pickup) celebrated its successful debut, and now another model awaits us - this time a full hybrid. Ford is refreshing its portfolio - success doesn't just come from anywhere.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is offered in a total of three trim levels: XL , XLT and Lariat. An optional FX4 Off-Road package is available on the XLT and Lariat versions (with EcoBoost and all-wheel drive). This ensures more off-road capability with robust all-terrain tires, chassis tuning, additional underbody protection, hill descent control and terrain-oriented driving modes such as mud and sand.

The Design

Ford Motor Company

With emphatically angular lines, a beefy front design, and slightly flared wheel arches, the new Ford Maverick 2022 fits seamlessly into the brand's previous pickup range. Unlike some classic pack donkeys, the Maverick has a self-supporting body. This is based on Ford's C2 platform, which was developed for compact models such as the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport.

With a vehicle length of 5.07 meters, it places itself below the Ford Ranger (about 30 cm shorter), making it the smallest pickup of the brand. The 2022 Ford Maverick is offered exclusively with the four-door Supercrew cabin, which can accommodate up to five people.

Up to 680 kg can be moved on the 1.37 meter long loading area. Thanks to Ford's "Flexbed" system, this becomes a variable, multifunctional loading area that can be upgraded with up to twelve anchor points and additional 12-volt and 110-volt 400-watt sockets.

The Interior

Ford Motor Company

The interior of the new Maverick is a mix between Ford's passenger and pickup models. Furthermore, some sophisticated solutions for luggage management are offered, which can optionally be expanded.

At first glance, you immediately notice that the interior is dominated by gray plastic, which has been counteracted with a few color accents - with moderate success. The cockpit contains two classic round instruments with an information display embedded in the middle.

An 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 4 infotainment system, on the other hand, is emblazoned in the center of the dashboard. While the steering wheel has numerous multifunction buttons, the automatic is operated using a rotary wheel on the center console.

The Power

Ford Motor Company

The drive of the new Ford Maverick is not at all American, consisting of only two and four-cylinder options. The basis is an economical 2.5-liter hybrid with Atkinson technology that delivers 194 hp and 210 Newton meters of torque.

With consumption estimated by the EPA of 1,5 gal per 60 miles, it is said to be the most fuel-efficient truck on the market. The power transmission takes place via a CVT transmission, which delivers the power purely to the front wheels.

If you want a little more power, you have to use the pure gasoline alternative. A 2.0 EcoBoost then slumbers under the hood, which has 253 hp and a maximum of 376 Nm of torqueon the road and is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the hybrid version, this Maverick is also available with all-wheel drive as an option.

The maximum trailer load for the compact Ford pickup is quite manageable at 907 kg . However, at least in the case of the EcoBoost Turbo version, it can be doubled with the corresponding optional " Tow Package ".
