Ford is offering a new alteration of their electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning to police departments across the country, and it’s named the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV.
As a leading law enforcement vehicle producer, Ford has to make police-dedicated versions of every great model they have, the same rule goes for their first ever electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning. The vehicle will receive several modifications before getting off the production line, plus other accommodation to receive other third-party equipment while in service. The most interesting part is the range-extending battery with 580 horsepower. To distinguish it from regular lightning trucks Ford has added the acronym SSV to the name, referring to Special Service Vehicle.
In fact, the extended range battery comes as an option, law enforcement still can choose to take the standard issue one, which is still more than enough, with 230 miles of range and 452 hp driving all four wheels. Enough to launch the truck from 0 to 06 mph in 5 seconds.
For the officers’ comfort, Ford has covered the seats in cloth and redesigned the front one to accommodate the officers’ holsters. Floors were covered with vinyl instead of carpets and the seat belts got built-in steel intrusion plates. The SSV will also come with built-in roof lights. Of course, Ford cannot fully equip a police car, but it did its best to redesign the dashboard, making it ready to receive 3rd party equipment that police officers often use.
Police cars are not all about special hardware, some technology is always welcomed, Ford has equipped the Lightning Pro SSV with Ford Pro's platform of connected vehicles software. Making it easier for police departments to track, control and manage their Ford fleets. A useful tool considering that 65 percent of the total number of police vehicles across the country are made by ford, which is more than all other car makers combined.
