The headlight projection or head-up display is a new technology currently being developed by Ford to enhance road safety and driving experience.

The head-up display is not exactly a new technology; Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the first to implement it back in 1988. A lot has happened since then; the displays became larger, clearer, and more informative, like the Lexus LS’s 24-inch projection system.

More developments are coming our way soon, with Ford’s new technology. Ford’s "high-resolution" headlights will be able to display signs, directions, speed limits, and even weather on the road right ahead of the car, Making sure that the driver is perfectly aware of all the surrounding elements and important information concerning his trip.

The technology doesn’t stop there, Ford’s headlights will have the ability to project road lines and markings in case the actual ones are fading. This will not help only the driver but also other close-by road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, which will effectively reduce road accidents caused by unclear road lines, like a faded crosswalk for example.

The head-up display can even draw a safe path that the driver can take to overtake a cyclist, for example.

Ford sees a lot of potential in this new technology; developers want to fully integrate it with the infotainment system, giving it more and more functional uses, like displaying detailed weather conditions, GPS directions and even projecting the car’s width to make sure that the car fits in a parking spot or a narrow area. These are just a few examples of what we can see in the future when the headlight projection technology is fully developed.

There’s no hint on when to implement the headlight projection on a production model, but we’re confident that there will be a time when we will see it as a standard feature on every vehicle.

The headlight projection technology is all about safety and functionality, and that’s what Coverking stands for.
