As always, Ford is trying to appeal to a wider range of customers, this time with a new invention, an EV Charging Robot oriented toward disabled drivers.
This innovation made in collaboration with Dortmund University in Germany will minimize the driver’s involvement in the charging operation, Ford says that disabled drivers will be able to monitor the robotic arm using their smartphones without having to step out of the car.
It’s clear that Ford saw an opportunity for a new market after examining recent reports stating that Disabled drivers consider “ease of charging” as a determining factor when it comes to buying an electric car. Thus, Ford has launched this new project as part of a larger research operation interested in developing hands-free charging solutions for electric vehicles and fully automatic charging for autonomous vehicles.
The robotic charging station is currently under meticulous testing in real-life situations, as mentioned earlier, the driver can activate the robot through the FordPass app, when activated, the station lid opens and the robotic arm extends automatically towards the inlet, guided by a small camera. After charging, the arm retracts to its initial position.

These new developments open the gates for several possibilities, the robotic arm use won’t be exclusively limited to disabled drivers, companies could benefit from it to have a more efficient and fast charging for their fleets, and it can also minimize the charging time for regular drivers.
