Ford's Hydrogen-Powered Engine Could Save The Mustang V8

Ford has developed new patents that may help prolong the use of the combustion engine in cars longer than previously thought. The patents could keep the Ford Mustang's legendary V8 engine under the hood.

Muscle Cars & Trucks first reported on the Ford patent documents, which describe a turbocharged hydrogen gas engine built to run in various states and combustion air ratios. This system would create leaner operating ratios and mitigate the risks of detonation.

A direct injection hydrogen/air fuel cell is described in the patent. The fuel cell would allow the hydrogen to produce fifteen percent more power than gasoline. Ford's engine design proposes using exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) to manage the combustion process and adjust the lambda value as needed. To prevent pre-ignition and maximize the efficiency of hydrogen fuel, Ford is working to control lambda - which is the value given to represent a fuel's ratio with oxygen to complete a full burn.

A higher exhaust gas re-circulation ratio would produce a leaner fuel/air mixture, thus producing more torque, and would adjust under low-torque demands to create a richer air/fuel ratio.

The patent also mentions that this hydrogen combustion setup could be used in a hybrid format. It depicts an electric motor between the engine and transmission. The document's wording suggests that there are many forms of hybridization possible, including series, parallel, and series-parallel hybridization.

Other automakers have also introduced hybrid vehicles. BMW's iX5 features a hydrogen-powered gas-electric hybrid engine, while Toyota has developed a hydrogen fuel cell version of its Lexus 5.0-liter V8 engine with Yamaha.

As the world continues to move toward electric vehicles, companies like Ford need to find a way to extend the life of their combustion engine products by developing new systems that may help prolong the use of these engines in cars.

Meanwhile, it's important to protect your vehicle from damage to prolong its own life. You can do this by keeping your car out of the elements.

Coverking’s car cover is the perfect option to ensure that your vehicle is around longer, no matter what engine it has under the hood! and you won't have to worry about it fading or getting damaged.

Your car's windshield is its first line of defense against the elements. Rain, wind, insects; all slam into your windshield with force, and over time, this can cause debris to attach itself to your windshield, which will reduce the visibility of the driver.

Because of this, it's important to ensure that you have Coverking windshield covers, which can help protect your windshield from damage and reduce visibility issues. These covers are easy to install and remove when necessary, so they won't get in your way as you drive or park.

Every car owner knows that the interior of their car is just as important as the exterior. After all, you spend time in your car every single day, so you want to make sure it's comfortable and well-protected. Coverking’s custom dash covers, mats, and seat covers are designed to keep your car looking pristine and protect it from damage, no matter how much time you spend driving.
