GM delivers electricity to FedEx's fleet.
Electric vans may have the potential to be the future of transportation. Delivering packages isn't far off from using them as a means of transporting goods, which is exactly what General Motors' BrightDrop subsidiary announced with its first delivery of 150 electric delivery vans to FedEx.
The partnership between FedEx and BrightEdge is an exciting development in the EV transportation market. Under the agreement, FedEx will purchase up to 20,000 next-generation Electric Vans from BrightEdge.
The delivery company has been slowly ramping up its electric vehicle usage over the past few years. The new fleet will help FedEx meet its goal of lowering its greenhouse gas emissions and increasing renewable energy use.
In response to the expected influx of electric vans into FedEx's business, the delivery company announced that it would be adding more vehicle charging stations to deal with the anticipated congestion.
The BrightDrop fleet of electric delivery vans gives consumers the ability to choose from two different models. The larger vehicle, the Zevo 400, has a carrying capacity of 2,200 pounds and can travel about 250 miles on a single charge. The smaller Zevo 400 is planned for local deliveries in congested urban areas.
The e-delivery truck is the latest example of GM pushing hard into electric power, which it hopes can remake its image and generate new revenue as consumers ditch cars in favor of SUVs and trucks.
