gmGM expands handsfree driving to fullsize suvs

GM will make its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) aka super cruise available for more car models and on more roads in the near future.

Super Cruise is an advanced system that allows drivers to sit back and enjoy the ride, while their cars take over driving. A large portion of North American highways are included in the system, and GM is still working on expanding its maps to include more and more roads, promising to reach more than 400,000 miles (644,000 kilometers) of mapped roads in the U.S. and Canada.

But up until now, only a portion of GM’s top car models benefited from this luxury, while the rest of the lineup had to be content with an older limited version, the company is changing that, though, rendering the super cruise system standard on a new list of vehicles. The start will be with full-size SUVs, specifically, those built on Oct. 3, 2022, or later. The list includes the following models:

  • 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe – High Country and Premier trims
  • 2023 Chevrolet Suburban – High Country and Premier trims
  • 2023 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade-V
  • 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate

GM is thinking about older cars as well; existing car models that already have built-in Super Cruise will benefit from an over-the-air (OTA) update that will expand the available road network. Other software updates are expected over the coming months, with the purpose of delivering more enhancements to the software.

Now with Super Cruise becoming a standard issue on a large portion of GM’s lineup, the company needs a new premium system for select luxury models, and that would be the upcoming Ultra Cruise3, software that we will discover sometime next year.

Having super cruise software won't matter much in the face of harsh weather, or aggressive environments. You should think ahead, and prepare your vehicle to face all sorts of dangers around it.
