GM to Double Size of Hands-Free Driver Assistance Network
GM is expanding its Super Cruise network, including more and more roads in the United States and Canada, and making driving long distances a more pleasant experience.
But first, what is the super cruise system? It’s a system developed by GM and used in several GM & subsidiaries’ models, it relies on LiDAR map data, real-time cameras, radars, and GPS to drive the car along highway lanes with no intervention from the driver. Several sensors around the car are used to keep the car centered in the designated lane.
The system also has the ability to brake or accelerate to maintain a stable gap between the car and the vehicle ahead. Some versions even have the ability to change lanes and overtake slow traffic.
The hands-free driver assistance technology will be doubled in size. The happy news was recently announced by GM, saying that drivers now can explore hands-free hundreds of thousands of additional miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada.
The update will be delivered over the air starting this year to all GM models based on the VIP electrical architecture. This extension will be completely free, to the delight of all GM car owners.
Currently, Super Cruise is limited to mapped divided highways aka interstates, the new update will expand its range of operation to more undivided and divided highway roads including state and federal routes. The new map includes iconic North American roads, such as The Mother Road – U.S. Route 66, Pacific Coast Highway – CA Route 1, Overseas Highway – U.S. Route 1, and Trans-Canada Highway.
GM is very serious when it comes to driving assistance technology, as explained by said Mario Maiorana, GM chief engineer, Super Cruise: "GM is all in when it comes to accessible advanced driver assistance technology. We are adding Super Cruise to more vehicles than ever, and on more roads, for more customers to experience,”, and he added: “We are pursuing what we believe to be the most comprehensive path to autonomy in the industry with the responsible deployment of automated driving technology like Super Cruise at the core of what we do.”
