CruiseGMS cruise robotaxi service to expand into phoenix austin

Cruise, the robotaxi company, is expanding. General Motors, Cruise’s mother company, announced that Arizona and Texas are next, after California.

Cruise began its existence as a San Francisco-based startup 6 years ago. The small company represented an innovative idea that caught the eye of General Motors. The automotive giant then bought the company and accelerated its development and expansion. Cruise got its first permit in San Francisco back in June, transporting passengers during nighttime in low traffic areas. In a recent development, GM announced that the company will expand its services to Phoenix, Arizona, and Austin, Texas before this year’s end.

Phoenix and Austin citizens will benefit from the same service Cruise is currently providing for San Francisco. The robotaxis won't have a safety driver to take over the car if the system malfunctions, but that’s about it, Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt refrained from giving more details about the company’s operations in Texas and Arizona.

Cruise, however, will need to prove itself a worthy service provider for Phoenix inhabitants, customers there are already familiar with the concept, as Waymo, a Google subsidiary, has been operational in their city for a while. Observers note that various robotaxi companies are expanding to the same geographic areas in the US, overlapping their services in some specific cities. Following this pattern, Waymo intends to expand to San Francesco, and start competing with Cruise there as well.

Robotaxi is a daring concept, but the technology is not perfect yet. Companies are working hard to prove that their cars are as safe as regular vehicles, or even safer, considering that they eliminate the human error factor from the driving equation. However, a trail of minor incidents keeps local authorities reluctant to permit this kind of service on their roads, but the future is promising, and critics predict a day when all taxis will be all robotaxis.

Scientific innovation proved that a car can drive itself, but it didn’t produce yet a car that can protect itself against weather, dust, spill, and other minor accidents. Well, maybe in the future, but for now, that is Coverking’s Job! The leading car cover company that vows to protect your car and keep it safe at all times and conditions.
