Once the eco way of thinking is turning, there is no end to new innovative ideas, the latest of which is GM’s new feature that captures and repurposes wasted energy from the battery. The system will be standard in all GM Ultium-based EVs.

The new system will have several benefits according to GM, it is expected to increase the cars’ range, reduce the energy wasted on heating features, and it can even increase the charging speed.

The functioning of an EV platform creates a considerable amount of heat, resulting from operating electronics and propulsion components, this heat is considered wasted energy. The new feature allows the car to harvest the heat and humidity from inside and even outside the vehicle and reuse it as an integral part of the cabin’s heating system, this makes it more efficient and responsive to outside temperature changes than its ICE counterparts, increasing the interior comfort.

The gained energy will help to alleviate some of the pressure from the batteries, keeping its power concentrated mainly on running the car. This arrangement automatically increases the car’s range by about 10%.

Doug Parks, GM executive vice president, had a few words to say about the new system, “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like Ultium’s energy recovery capabilities This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance, and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.”

It’s important to note that the new feature didn’t pop up out of nowhere, GM worked diligently for years to perfect it, right now the system is covered by eleven patents and four publications and the first implementation attempts date back to the first GM electric car, the EV1 produced in the late 1990s.

GM’s new heating feature hopes to increase interior comfort in an efficient eco-friendly way.
