Honda has long been known for producing environmentally-friendly vehicles and has already published its intentions to introduce new and improved electric vehicles. The company recently confirmed its plans to boost its investment in solid-state battery technology.
"The joy of driving will be passed on to our models even in the era of electrification," During the announcement, the company stated. The automaker's line-up of battery-powered cars will feature two sports cars, one will be marketed as a specialty model and the other as a flagship model. Honda has released a sketch displaying the two electric vehicles. Both are concealed behind a black sheet but one of which seems to have a coupe-like silhouette.
The automaker is planning to spend $40 billion over a 10-year period on electrification and is expecting to produce 2 million EVs annually by the year 2030. The electric vehicle production will be split between China and the United States, where EV-only production lines are being planned in some areas.
The solid-state battery technology Honda is developing could be used in electric vehicles, although it's too early to tell if either firm will adopt the tech. To accelerate its research, the company will invest about $342 million to build a demonstration line that is scheduled to open in 2024.
Additionally, Honda plans to release a new electric crossover built with technology from General Motors by 2024. We don't know what the crossover will look like, but it will use the chassis and powertrain designed by GM.
