How Car Radar Sees Around Corners

A new radar system is entering business soon, with some new abilities, never seen before in the automotive industry.

The new version of the Neural Propulsion Systems is expected to revolutionize the driving experience and accelerate the development of autonomous cars. This new version called the Atomic Sense Platform camera/MIMO lidar/multiband radar sensor has the ability to detect pedestrians as far as  650 yards, not only that, but it can also detect approaching vehicles in intersections even from behind solid objects.

Basically, the radar works at multiple wavelengths, two of which can refract and bend around corners. The waves in question are the UHF (900 MHz) and C bands (5 GHz). Once they bounce back from a moving object, the radar receives the signal.

However, the signal that comes back is often weak and confusing, creating "ghost" image reflections, and that’s mainly due to the great number of bounces that it had to do to go around the corner and come back. Here starts the second phase of the detection procedure, with the Bayesian inference algorithm coming into play. The algorithm is run by an artificial intelligence system, capable of analyzing every signal to accurately determine the nature and position of the coming object, eliminating all the ghost reflections that the radar has received.

Experts have noticed that the 5 GHz waves are particularly effective at detecting pedestrians, especially those walking between cars and during heavy rain. The results are always better when the 5 GHz waves are coupled with other wavelengths effective at detecting cars.

The challenge that needs to be overcome now is to find a way to operate all of the 4 radar bands on the same unit which means that developers should find the optimal aperture size to fit them all. Some theories suggest that employing a "sparse array" that places small transmitters and receivers at geometrically optimized distances, can resolve this problem. We will see how that will play out in reality.

The Atomic Sense Platform proves that fully autonomous cars can be a reality soon, Illuminating all fears of failures and accidents.

All these developments have only one objective in mind; to make cars safer, But what about the car’s own safety and protection? There’s only one answer, Coverking!
