Glaswegian company Hydrogen Vehicle Systems shows off a 5.5-tonne “technology demonstrator” that uses hydrogen fuel cells and batteries to power itself and its trailers.

Hydrogen has been hailed as a revolution in transport with companies investing millions into the technology. But, even in its early stages, hydrogen could lead to some eye-opening innovations. The Glasgow-based Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) has produced a 5.5-tonne technology demonstrator hydrogen lorry equipped with a “bloodypressure” system. Just like the vehicles it was designed to power, this demonstrator aims to stand out from the crowd and show off what’s possible with innovative technology.

Hydrogen cars are getting their worldwide infrastructures in place, with zero emissions and zero tailpipe emissions, the hydrogen economy has grabbed the attention of nearly everyone. Many see it as the next step for electric cars, and Glasgow is leading the way. The company says the lorry is a “5.5-tonne technology demonstrator” and “a hint to its planned 40-tonne zero-emission HGV”. Designed for zero emissions and low pollution, this new range of vehicles is poised to revolutionize the way we deliver our goods, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and consequently lowering CO2 emissions from road traffic.

The firm's 'SEMAS' fuel efficient brain controls the motor which reduces drag and improves fuel efficiency while making it easier to haul heavy loads - such as construction equipment or tractors. The new model has been designed to look and feel like an aerodynamic truck, with an all-new chassis built around the hydrogen powertrain.

Our zero-emission trucks are a key part of decarbonising the logistics sector,”. “Hydrogen is the perfect fuel for the haulage industry, offering long ranges and quick refuelling thanks to stations easily integrated into key transport networks.” HVS boss Jawad Khursheed stated.
