Some mid-engine supercars were on Hyundai's table before being scrapped in favor of the new N division cars.
Carmakers spend a lot of time peeping at their neighbors’ yards, trying to see what they’re up to, out of fear of lagging behind. This practice restrains the technology, design, performance, price, and many other aspects of all new cars. This is the story of a mid-engine model designed by Hyundai in the 2010s. Obviously, we don’t see any mid-engine Hyundai on the road today, so what’s the deal?
Albert Biermann, the former head of Hyundai's N division explained the “why” in an interview with Top Gear; he said that the company was focusing more and more on the N division, developing numerous supercars that can go toe to toe with the Acura NSX.
The mid-engine model was in the early development stages, it didn’t even have an official name, and Hyundai feared that it won’t have enough personality to be taken seriously, so the project was abandoned before it reached any serious stages.
Nonetheless, Biermann gave some technical details about the car that they called “The Chairman's Car.”. The supercar’s body was supposed to be made from a carbon fiber tub, and powered by a mid-engine that could work with a hybrid platform if needed, or it could even use a hydrogen cell.
Hyundai could have given us a car with supercar power, and supercar handling at a relatively low price, kind of similar to what the Acura NSX is offering. Biermann replied to that by saying: “Sure, but not boring,”
The launch of the N division globally put an end to all those adventures, models like the i30 N and the Veloster N in Europe and the US respectively was a great success that proved that focusing on the N division instead of mid-engine supercars was worth it
However, Hyundai is not abandoning the supercar segment entirely, and the N Vision 74 concept is proof of that, the car was unveiled earlier in 2022 and Hyundai claims that it has 670 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, coming from a hydrogen-electric hybrid powertrain
What does it take for a car to catch your eye? You may say Design, performance, price, or even fuel economy. However, one aspect is often overlooked both by carmakers and drivers; resistance to the harsh environment and weather conditions. Coverking took note of that and made a collection of high-quality car covers, custom-made using advanced 3D scanning technology.
Coverking products are designed to face all kinds of harsh weather conditions including but not limited to rain, snow, hail, sun, dust, and more. The multi-layered fabric will keep all the danger outside while giving your car’s finish a soft touch on the inside.
