In a recent round of crash tests, the IIHS has concluded that many automakers have made automatic emergency braking (AEB) near-universal. According to a press release, in the latest round of testing, "about 85 percent of the 2022 model year vehicles have earned a superior rating" in IIHS testing. Because of that, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced that it is time to change the way automakers are rated in their safety tests. The organization will remove the criteria of front crash prevention from its award for Top Safety Pick as of next year, although the measures that keep pedestrians safe will remain.
For the past few years, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has tested crash prevention systems at 12 mph and 25 mph. However, based on data on police-reported crashes, only 3 percent of collisions happen at speeds below 25 mph. Therefore, this summer, the organization will begin investigating how these systems perform at higher speeds.
In order to test that, six vehicles equipped with a front crash prevention system will be subjected to a series of crash tests at speeds of up to 45 mph. The organization will test the capability of different types of cars, from passenger vehicles to motorcycles, at higher speeds.
The IIHS is not alone in driving this change, either. As the IIHS points out, many manufacturers of scanners and radars are working towards systems that will improve responsiveness. These are widespread improvements that should hopefully reduce the number of accidents caused by overly aggressive braking and swerving.
