InsiderInsider source details next generation toyota tacoma engines

Toyota is preparing a new update for the extremely successful Tacoma. This includes some new, impressive engine and powertrain options.

Despite its fairly old age, the Toyota Tacoma still dominates the mid-size truck scene, scoring high sales numbers every year. The truck won the trust of customers looking for a reliable, high-performance truck without dwelling too long on the technological details.  Despite that, Toyota believes that the Tacoma can do even better, once the next generation hits the market.

According to new insider leaks coming from The Fast Lane Trucks, The upcoming Tacoma will feature a new platform; the same one we find under the Tundra and Sequoia. Not only that, but the truck will also run on two new engines.

The first engine option will be a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, this V4 is a rather familiar member of the Toyota family, it’s currently used on the Toyota Highlander and another version of it is also used on the Lexus RX 350. The engine was coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission In both instances.

The official output of this engine is 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. These figures should naturally be improved to better suit the performance demands of a pickup truck, and this is not out of Toyota’s reach, the company tuned the same engine to make 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque on the Lexus RX 350. But even with this slight increase, the 2.4-liter turbocharged still lags behind the competition.

And that’s where the second engine option comes into play. To compensate for the 2.4-liter turbocharged shortcomings, Toyota is offering a Hybrid Max option. In this setup, the standard 2.4-liter V4 is supplemented by a hybrid system that would presumably raise its output to anywhere from 340 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque to 366 hp and 406 lb-ft if we take other Toyota models with the same setup as reference. Transmission in this case will be a six-speed automatic.

Unlike most carmakers, Toyota always brands its hybrid systems as power boosters instead of just fuel savers, and the upcoming Tacoma is no different. The power increase would lift it to the same power level as the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon for example.
