Ford-F150 Lightning Fast Charging
The new ford f-150 lightning is finally here! So, the main question now is how fast will it charge? And do the charging stats stay the same in real-world charging situations?
Recently, Darren Palmer, Ford's vice president of Electric Vehicle Programs, and Linda Zhang, the F-150 Lightning's Chief Engineer, shared the truck’s charging data with the specialized website InsideEVs, trusting it with making the first public third-party analysis of the truck’s charging capabilities.
As part of the f-150 lighting advertisement campaign, Ford has announced that the Extended Range battery pack will be able to go from 15% to 80% in just 41 minutes. While the Standard Range battery pack will need 4 more minutes to do that.
You notice that the smaller battery requires more time to charge and that’s mainly due to the larger battery’s ability to endure higher charging rates deeper into the charging curve.
Ford’s data was in the form of a line chart, showing the charging power in relation to the state of charge and charging time. InsideEVs did the job of converting that into an intelligible charging curve that everyone can understand. The charging curve gave the analysts a better understanding of the truck’s behavior, allowing them to make accurate time estimates for the 0 to 100% charging session – you can check that on the video above-.
The use of the 400-volt battery architecture raised some fears about the long charging time. These suspicions were based on Mustang Mach-E’s performance; a car that runs on the same battery as the new electric truck. However, the F-150 proved everyone wrong, the charging time is reasonable, maintaining a charging rate of about 100 kW until 80% charge.
We can safely say that the F-150 Lightning’s charging capabilities are not the best. But they are more than enough for the regular owner. Going on long trips won’t be a problem as long as you have 150 kW or 350 kW DC fast-charging stations along the route.
Ford did everything it can to make sure that the F-150 lighting is roadworthy, now it should brace and hope for the best in the face of reviewers, critics and analysts.
