Lamborghini Believes Synthetic Fuels EV Alternative

Lamborghini is trying to develop machines that run on alternative fuels.

It seems supercars might not be completely reliant on petrol for power after all. Lamborghini is seriously considering whether synthetic fuels, such as hydrogen or vegetable oil, could lead to a future where the company's luxury cars are fuelled by anything except petrochemicals.

Lamborghini believes synthetic fuels could be an alternative to going electric. The supercar maker is keeping a close eye on other automotive manufacturers that are giving their electric powertrain strategies extra consideration. Lamborghini says it's too early to tell what the right answer is for the company’s future. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated in an interview with Tech Crunch:

"It's a bit difficult, because the European Parliament decided earlier in the year that they will ban gas engines and diesel engines by 2035, and the smaller manufacturers like Lamborghini by 2036, so we don't need to decide now."

While the company is still evaluating the viability of this option, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has said that if it doesn't gain traction, the company will transition to all-electric vehicles in the early 2030s.

The first model from the Italian brand that has no connection to an internal combustion engine will arrive in 2028 as a crossover followed by a plug-in hybrid Urus mode.

Lamborghini remains committed to lowering its emissions, and that may be the best example of how Italian automakers are tackling high fuel consumption. Whether they see it or not, the writing is on the wall: hybridisation is the future--and now Lamborghini is leading the charge.
