Lightning eMotors the EV conversion specialist is developing a new wireless EV charging technology.

Wireless charging has been a wild dream for decades, now it has become a reality for phones, but not yet for electric vehicles. Lightning eMotors is ready to change that, the EV conversion company is signing a new collaboration with wireless charging provider HEVO Inc to come up with a new program capable of realizing the first production-worthy EV wireless charging system.

For those of you who don't know Lightning eMotors, it’s a company that specializes in designing, engineering, customizing, and manufacturing a wide range of EVs, based on the needs of its fleet customers.  The company is growing rapidly, recently it has moved on from customizing existing platforms provided by large carmakers to manufacturing its own purpose-built EVs, based on its proper platform.

Lightning eMotors is also exploring other EV-related technology like autonomous capabilities and charging infrastructure.

The wireless charging system can be included in this list of new adventures, Lightning eMotors is hardly the first company to try EV wireless charging, Volvo developed a similar system, but one that’s exclusively oriented toward passenger EVs. Lightning eMotors, however, has bigger dreams, the new collaboration with HEVO Inc will hopefully allow it to develop a wireless charging system capable of accommodating its entire lineup of fleet vehicles.

HEVO Inc and Lightning eMotors intend on demonstrating the results of their work at the beginning of next year in Lightning eMotors HQ in Colorado. The demonstration consists of wirelessly charging an EV based on Lightning eMotors’ ZEV3 platform using HEVO’s Rezonant E8.

The Rezonant E8 wireless solution is currently classified as an overnight charging system, capable of delivering 8 kW rates. But HEVO is currently developing plans to make more potent 11 kW, 50 kW, and eventually 100-300 kW versions.

HEVO founder and CEO Jeremy McCool explained the utility and practicality of wireless charging;

We are impressed with Lightning eMotors’ high-quality products and focus on innovation. Our collaboration will enable significant benefits for fleet operators seeking a more convenient and seamless charging experience. Busy drivers can forget to plug in, potentially creating the need for charging attendants. Cords can create a variety of operational challenges, including OSHA and union safety concerns associated with wired devices. We believe this collaboration will establish the industry standard for charging EV fleets and provide a complete solution to customers seeking a wireless charging experience.”

It’s cool to watch invisible electricity getting through into your car via a wireless charging system. You will however get a very different feeling when dust or any other element tries to do the same. Coverking is ready to help you prevent that. A custom-made car cover from Coverking will do the job, it will keep your car perfectly isolated from any kind of external danger while giving you the chance to choose a fresh new interior style for your beloved car!
