Lincoln has revealed its special Model L100 Concept in the Monterey car show, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1922 Model L

The Monterey car show has never disappointed us, revealing the most exciting and futuristic car models every year. One of the biggest surprises this year was the Model L100 Concept, revealed by Lincoln as a futuristic autonomous vehicle, exactly 100 years after the release of their first luxury model, the 1922 Model L.

The brand hopes the extremely advanced technological features in this concept will be common staples in future car designs.

The car drew a lot of attention at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, showing a unique design full of grace. Attendees were genuinely attracted to the L100 as it represented the purest form of Lincoln’s Quiet Flight design ethos.

The general body shape took the form of an aerodynamic sweeping roofline, leaning towards the rear like in a Kammback-based design, finished with a signature abrupt angled vertical tail-end. This design’s main function is naturally to reduce drag, but there’s no denying that it also gives the car a unique aesthetic look. Other design influences can be noticed, especially that of the 1936 Lincoln-Zephyr, one of the first car models to adopt the teardrop silhouette.

The car’s body is not a static piece of glass; it’s in fact as dynamic as it can be, with an expansive glass roof that opens and closes in complete harmony with the rear-hinged doors. Getting in and out of the car is a complete theatrical show, besides the doors and roof, the motion is accompanied by a small light show powered by the Lincoln Embrace system, the ceremony extends to the wheels as well, smart wheel covers integrated with lighting and sensors to “communicate motion, battery life, and human presence.”

“Concept vehicles allow us to reimagine and illustrate how new experiences can come to life with the help of advanced technologies and allow our designers more creative freedom than ever before,” said Anthony Lo, chief design officer, of Ford Motor Company. “With the Model L100, we were able to push the boundaries in ways that evolve our Quiet Flight brand DNA and change the way we think about Lincoln designs of tomorrow.”

The car’s Design doesn’t end here, the design team made sure to include smaller details that further emphasize the car’s luxury status. A crystal greyhound hood ornament reigns supreme at the front under the glass hood, the greyhound design goes back more than 100 years ago, when Edsel Ford selected it in the 1920s. In the interior as well we find a small jewel-inspired chess piece controller dominating the central control. Seats are extremely adjustable, with a lot of movement possibilities to encourage a more social setting while the car takes care of everything else.

Lincoln’s vision is centered on the promotion of autonomous driving, imagining a future where artistically designed control knobs will become standard, and steering wheels obsolete. Some of these ideas are translated into the Model L100 Concept, waiting for the time when they can reach the production phase.

The most satisfying sight is that of a shiny new car, coming out fresh from the production line. Everyone wishes to keep his car looking that way forever!
