While the interest in SUV models is increasing day by day, Maserati could not remain indifferent to this situation and introduced the second SUV model of the brand. The 2022 Maserati Grecale, which we can describe as the sibling of the Levante model, is also starting the electrification process of the manufacturer.

The brand's new SUV model will be offered in an all-electric "Folgore" version, as well as versions with internal combustion and hybrid power units. It has been announced that the all-electric model will be added to the product range later.

The Design

The Design

If we start with the design of the vehicle, the Grecale looks like a Maserati even at first glance. It is impossible not to notice Grecale with the brand’s famous wide front grille with its unique logo inside, which has become the signature of the brand. Although the Ford Puma-like headlights rising above the front grille soften the aggressive look of the vehicle, it is possible to prevent this look with the Trofeo equipment.

Following in the footsteps of the Maserati Levante, Grecale takes a simpler stance on the side panels. However, the three-piece ventilation ducts, another Maserati signature, and the “Trident” logo on the C-pillar have brought this section to life.

When we move to the rear section, thin taillights welcome us. The SUV model, which has a sporty stance with its curved rear window line, also supports this look with its diffuser under the bumper and quad exhaust outlets. We can say that Grecale, which stands out with its clean and measured lines in general, has managed to be stylish and remarkable without going overboard.

The Interior

The Interior

Maserati has also taken important steps in the interior with the Grecale. As a car manufacturer, Maserati is a little behind compared to other premium brands, but they seem to have closed this difference with the interior it offers in Grecale.

Switching to a dual-screen layout on the front console, Maserati hasn't forgotten the digital display screen either. While the new model hosts a 12.3-inch infotainment system screen, there is an 8.8-inch touchscreen called the "comfort panel" under this screen. Maserati seems to say goodbye to the physical keys by stating that the controls will be made through this screen.

Alongside these three screens, Maserati has stated that there will be a fourth screen in the cockpit. Although it does not attract attention at first glance, the clock on the infotainment system screen is actually a digital display. Incorporating a digital smartwatch for the first time, Maserati also announced that this display can be used as a G force gauge and compass, that’s neat.

The Size

The Size

The Maserati Grecale is 191 inches long, 78 inches wide, and 65 inches high. The wheelbase of the vehicle was announced as 114 inches. It would not be wrong to say that with these dimensions, Grecale will offer a comfortable journey in its interior supported by new technologies.

The Power

The new Grecale will be offered with exclusive “PrimaSerie” equipment for launch alongside GT, Modena, and Trofeo. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology will serve in the GT and Modena levels. While the GT produces 300 horsepower, this value rises to 330 horsepower in Modena.

The torque levels of both models are the same: 450 Nm. While the 300 hp GT takes 5.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, the 330 hp Modena needs 5.3 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph. The maximum speed of both models was announced by Maserati as 150 mph.

In terms of performance, the Grecale Trofeo is at the top of the model range. Trofeo, powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine taken from the MC20 model, produces 530 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque. The top speed of the vehicle, which reaches 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, is 177 mph.

Unlike the MC20, which has wet-sump lubrication, Grecale Trofeo also uses a technology that allows it to completely shut down its 3 cylinders.

When we switch to the all-electric Grecale Folgore; It has been announced that the model, which will come with a 105 kWh battery, can produce approximately 800 Nm of torque. The new Grecale Folgore will rise on the platform developed for models with traditional internal combustion engines, unlike the SLTA EV platform developed by Stellantis for electric motors.

In this sense, the fact that the electric model, which is expected to experience some disadvantages, will gradually come with the outdated 400 V technology, which may be another handicap for the brand’s efforts on going electric.

Maserati, which wants to get a bigger slice of the ever-growing SUV market, looks quite ambitious with the new Grecale. We expect the new Maserati Grecale GT, Modena, and Trofeo to hit the roads of the world in late 2022.
